Locker?

I have a 99 4x4 v6 that currently doesnt have a rear locker. what are some good lockers available?

 

ARB, Detroit, Trutrac, Auburn

not too sure i haven't bought any lockers but do your research on each one of them and pick the one that fits your needs for the money

arb is the best because its a selectable air locker which you can activiate and turn off when not needed. it will save your tires and give you better every day drivability as you will not know its there

I have the detroit truetrac in the rear because i drive my truck on the road daily, its a limited slip but its a gear type instead of the conventional clutch type so u dont have clutches to slip or wear out so that means that both wheels will pull no matter how cocked up the suspension is and i cant even tell thats its there on the road till you spin the truck, pretty much the mericale locker if you are goining to be driving your truck on the road in my opinion, ive been in situations where one wheel is completely off the ground and it just pulls right on through, im planning on ordering one for the front too within the next few weeks

Yea u will either need a press or let someone that has a press do it for u, u will also need new carrier bearings if you go with a locker that replaces the whole carrier (which is all of them except the lockright) unless you have a special machine to remove them with out messin em up, and yes you can put a locker in a 2.7, thats what my truck is and i put the truetrac in the rear and am planning to do the same to the front sometime soon

 

@dole: You should have it professionally installed if you are not a near-expert with a wrench and have done gear work before. the work is intricate and painstaking.

@jc: engine size doesn't really matter, but what axle you have does.

 

Me and my dad done the install on mine and it wasnt all that bad, but like HusqyRider said what matters is what axle u have, it doesnt have anything to do with the motor unless what motor u have determines what axle you have

how can i tell what kind of axle i have, i know that i have 4.58 gears.
oh and my 2.7l is automatic too

 

Not sure what you are asking, but if you don't have the TRD offroad option which is an e-locker and you have not modified the rear diff, the rear end is an Open Differential.

 

Are you sure? Unless someone messed with it, I don't think any version of the Tacoma came with factory 4.58s...

Look in your door sill on the driver side. Theres the little sticker with the vin and tire pressures and such. There's a 4 digit code somewhere on there that's a letter, 2 numbers, and a letter. Mine reads "A02A". This is the axle code for your truck. I'm sure someone will post it, but theres a table somewhere on here that tells you what each code means.

The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
First digit:

• A = 7.5" ring gear
• B = 8" ring gear

Next two digits:

• 01 = 3:42
• 02 = 3:58
• 03 = 4:10
• 04 = 4:56
• 05 = 3:15
• 06 = 3:91
• 07 = 4.30

Last digit:

• A = 2 Pinion, Open
• B = 4 Pinion, Open
• C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip

some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.
Edit by Ed Quinones on 10-7-05: I used to own a 99 Prerunner ext cab 2.7L with auto tranny and gear code of B07A. It came from the factory with a 4.56 gear ratio.
