Also make sure you have a good retrieval rope...otherwise you might lose your magnet

That was kind of my thought process as well. That and not wanting to lug a huge magnet in and out of the water.

I got to be careful where I plan on going because its basically on a railroad overpass. Im liable to latch on to a rail road tie...

I can only imagine yanking on that and the magnet pop off and come shooting out of the water at break-teeth speed...hitting me in the mouth. LOL

It would be interesting what you find, especially if the overpass has been there for a long time.

This might be a fun way to spend some time in the canoe. We have a lake nearby that used to have a ferry terminal and a couple of sawmills. It's all parks and homes now, but you can still see the pilings from where the buildings used to extend out over the water.

So its funny a friend of mine asked me about metal detecting and I asked if he heard of magnet fishing, and he said they were just talking about it...LOL so we are gearing up to go metal detecting and magnet fishing once it warms up! Im guessing a good nylon rope for the magnet?

As soon as it warms up a bit I’ll be going out and seeing what I can’t find or what garbage I can’t pull out of the water.

I'm a newb, but I bought a cheaper "good bang for the buck" brand called Tesoro. It has been great so far, catches some pretty deep stuff (8") and is good at differentiating between metal types. I would highly recommend it if looking for a decent, more affordable brand, but I'm sure if he/she is willing to go all out, there are better manufacturers out there.

I've had one for a few months but my only good find so far is a pocket knife. Brute force magnetics just came out with a new double sided magnet that would be good to troll behind a kayak, might give that one a try.
