How much haggling should I do?

    Happy Sunday everyone,

I have another question. I test drove a 2019 TRD Off-road today. After all the research I have done I knew a ton more than even the salesman knew. He seems like a cool guy and says he can wiggle the price around on the truck. My main questions is the truck on the lot is listed at $37,758 and has an internet price of $35,193. Will they match that price or give me that price? And from there if I have a trade in that is valued close to 5k and plan to put enough down to make my monthly payments around $250 to $300 dollars I will end up putting down close to 15k. I feel like with that big of a down payment I can negotiate an even lower OTD price. How much would everyone suggest me try to haggle the price down to?

You all are awesome and have helped me out a ton on my journey to owning my first Tacoma! Thanks again and will update regularly!

10% off MSRP before taxes and license. That internet price is too high.

You should be able to get the internet price without a problem. Maybe even a few grand less. Settle on a purchase price first then tell them you have a trade. I would wait to tell them how much you are putting down and where you want your note last. And no matter how low the payments are you can always get them a little lower.

Yeah, don't talk trade too soon. (And know enough about what you've got to be able to laugh in their face if they offer a stupid low number. Keep in mind that they'll offer something like a wholesale price, where if you sold it yourself privately, you'd be up at a "retail" price, which may or may not be worth the trouble to you.)

Money down isn't going to move the 'out the door' price by much. A lot down might even be bad, as it reduces the amount they're financing, which can reduce their incentives.

Strongly suggest you line up independent financing (bank, credit union) as an option, so you have something to compare to. If they offer a better deal, then great. If they suck, then you turn to your bank. Depending on what a douchenozzle the finance guy is, they'll focus on the payments, which can lead to you forgetting about the real cost of what you're buying.

The other other thing is that you can make dealers work against each other for your business. (This assumes you have a few in the neighborhood.) When I bought, I sent a note to almost a dozen dealers saying, "I'm a serious buyer in ___ timeframe. I want this specific truck. Please provide your best no-negotiation price." I followed with a phone call. A couple said, FU -- we don't do business that way. I ended up paying invoice. (Which itself is a fake number because of the holdbacks and other incentives, but I digress.) The thing about this system is that it finds the dealer that's most desperate to move a vehicle that month. (And it changes from month to month, dealer to dealer.) This is all based on the "Fighting Chance" system... google it for some pretty excellent resources. (When I did it, I think it was like, 40 bucks for the package, which seemed fair to me.)

I believe there is a $1000 Rebate going on right now too, so that should come off the lowest price.

10%>12% off MSRP then negotiate your trade. You may want to take your trade to Carmax (if one in your area) to see what they will purchase it for to give you an idea as to what Toyota should give you.

Leave a few business cards from some dealers in the area on your front passenger seat so the manager knows you've been shopping.

Are you financing through the dealer or with a bank?

When you finace in house the dealer gets you by having you focus on the monthly payment price instead of the total price.

Just one of the ways they sock it to you.

Don’t worry about the trade in, interest rate any of that at first. Just focus on the price of the truck.

A min of 4K off MSRP before tax/title is completely doable. Any rebates are no skin off dealers back and should not be considered in that number. Get all that negotiated before you talk/consider the trade. Average out KBB/NADA values on that for a general idea on its worth.

That’s a lot of good information I wish I would’ve known before I picked up my 19 last month. Although I feel like I got a decent deal, definitely think I could’ve gotten a better one especially since I told them about the trade right off the bat. I had to drive 2.5 hours to the dealer who gave the best price so I was already at a disadvantage because they knew I planned on buying. The one thing that pissed me off was looking at the paperwork after my long drive home and seeing some stupid fees like “final touch” and something else I didn’t see when signing the paperwork because I was so smoked from driving and negotiating. Ended up being an extra $600 they slipped in without me noticing. They got me. I contacted four dealers. Two didn’t even respond and the one I went with called me the day my truck came in and honored the price they gave me over the phone. I’ve seen some guys on here got way better deals than me. That’s awesome and glad they got it. If I ever buy a new truck again I’ll be more informed thanks to you guys. I still won in my mind because it’s a Tacoma

Offer 33500 then go to your absolute high of 34000 and leave if they won't go there. Don't even talk trade or payments until you get there.

This! and try to get it at this price out the door: Tax, title & license included. DONT TALK TRADE OR MONTHLY PAYMENTS or the stealer will have you literally by the yang yang!!! After you negotiate the price and its fixed, talk finance, but even then you've taken it in the rear...pre talk finance/interest with your credit union or bank and use that as your negotiation point. You do the squeezing...don't let the stealer squeeze you.

Her in SD you won’t get one that cheap! I paid 30k otd for my double cab 2.7 and I shopped for over a month! They wanted 38k for a trd 4x4 at all 4 local dealers.

Invoice is around 34,000. I would never pay higher than invoice I would offer 33,500 like @OMGitsme mentioned above.

What I did was email every dealer within 100 miles. Told them exactly what I wanted. Once quotes came in I sent those to the other dealers in my area to beat. Long story short ended up otd around 33000 for a dclb trd or quicksand. Showed up to longo toyota and they had it parked up front for my scheduled test drive and was done signing papers in about an hour. In my opinion you shouldn't have to even step on the lot before you know your final price.

From what I've seen on other threads, 10% off of MSRP seems to be the norm. I myself received $3500.00
