ok so a couple days ago I purchased new 265/70/17 bf ko2s and pro sema rims. They had the grease all over but thought whatever I’ll clean it when I get home. Now I just cleaned them and noticed scratches. Am I being silly or should I complain? You can tell when your looking for it. Only one wheel didn’t have scratches.

I don’t see why not. Give it a try and see what they say. I clearly see scratches.

Hmm, very minor scratches. The grease is just mounting lubricant. If you think it's worth your time going to complain about scratches that are inevitable (that is if you off road the truck which I will assume you might every now and then since you have a 4x4 TRD Sport) then go for it. I wouldn't waste my time. The only one I'd be bothered about is the second picture as it seems to have sheared off some material of the rim, but oh well my wheels get beat up since I offroad on dunes and mud.

An experienced tire mounter is critical. Many of the shops either use inferior equipment for protecting the rim, or use a careless person to mount the tires. I would go back up there and complain, and see if they offer to have the wheels repaired. A fair warning though, most of the shops disclaim any liability and indicate that some damage is unavoidable and they are not to be held liable. That's their first line of defense, and if you complain enough then they may agree to reimburse you for a repair. The question you have to ask yourself is how far do you want to take this?

I would complain and see if they will offer a repair. If not, it looks like the scratches are faint enough that I wouldn't stress over it too much, and consider it a lesson learned.

I noticed scratches on my Tacoma pro wheels after purchase and install at Toyota dealership. Scratches were just like the ones in your pictures. They replaced the wheel that was worst. They weren’t happy, but I never took possession of the wheels and noticed immediately before leaving dealer. They also chipped one of my take-off OR wheels so they replaced that too. Can’t hurt to ask if you have the time and patience.

I honestly wouldn’t complain. Hard to tell and more scratches to come anyway.

You guys all have good points. Owning a black truck my ocd has been calmed a bit because it is a truck but it is annoying that I just paid all that and have the scratches. They are minor enough but I may just say something and see what they say. But if they act like no big deal and don’t care they just lost a customer. I know it can’t be an easy job but that many scratches on on all the wheels except one is pretty ridiculous. I mean If it was on just one wheel and a scratch or two I can understand you know?

Yeah that’s messed up. Oh god I haven’t even looked at my old sport rims yet. They are in the pro boxes. I told them to be careful because I wanted to sell them. :annoyed::facepalm: I guess lesson learned...

Yep. Exactly. I told them I couldn’t sell with the chipped paint. They fussed about it and said it could’ve happened prior to them replacing them. But eventually replaced the wheel. The OR wheels chip really easy though. Good luck.

See this is a problem in the industry as well as others in general, people willing to accept substandard work. Granted they are minor and they will get scratched, that’s not the point. The point is he paid for brand new undamaged and the truck should be turned over to him in that manner.

Is this worth complaining probably not, but shops/people need to be held accountable or it’ll get worse. I’d probably let this slide, just be warned this industry is rampant with worse then this and people willing to accept it, which is worse because the scale continues to slide to shoddy workmanship.

On my truck, I had a shop take out my AC, I and fuck the front end up on a bumper install, that cost them 20k plus in replacing the entire AC, shop time and countless trips back to have it fixed properly which I supervised. Granted they new I was about to take them to court if they didn’t fix it properly as it was a new truck.

I absolutely understand where you're coming from. However I value my time more than to go back and fight for a scratch on new wheels which I will off road with anyway and they will see their fair share of small damage here and there.

Your example of a shop damaging your AC is entirely different, if I were in that situation I too would fight for them to fix it as I would not want to pay thousands myself. But for a $200~ wheel which will most likely get damaged anyway in the future I don't see it as being worth of my time and aggravation I'll encounter.
Each person sees it differently but that doesn't change that I can understand what you're saying about accepting substandard work.

I would totally complain. This people should take care of every vehicle coming in for service. I always let them know to take care of the truck cuz I will be inspecting it. They will continue to be negligent with costumers unless people start complaining, don’t let them get away with it. Is your hard earned money so is not fair to get them back all scratched up.

Take it to your local trails, after a couple trips to Uwharrie I've found that a small file to remove the high spots and a sharpie really does a great job on mine. Slide them against a couple rocks and you won't even notice those scratches.

I would bitch, a whole bunch. You are in NJ, salty roads. Aluminum and salt = corrosion. Anyone here that says, don't bother. I call bullshit, if it was their truck/money they would bitch.

not saying they didn't scratch your wheels during installation. but nobody has mentioned the mud on your tires. Is it possible that you did this yourself when you "cleaned them up"? I have seen that numerous times on peoples vehicles. not trying to start something, just curious.

You know what that thought popped in my head after I wrote the original thread. Where the fuck did that come from. I doubt the tires came like that. Those people better not have been off-roading in my truck. I need to look under the under carriage. I didn’t see any in the tread or wheel wells when I left but who knows. I took pics of it when I left so I have proof it was like that. Smh...no where in that dealership parking lot is mud...in regards to doing this myself absolutely not. I took pics before I cleaned them and the scratches showed under the grease.

Sadly, this is why my rims are still in the box in the garage. I'm waiting until I can find a reputable installer that has attention to detail. On my 09, I had the dealership mount tires on FJ TRD SE rims and they came out looking exactly like your pictures. The only difference is that the FJ rims had a deep clearcoat and I was able to buff most of them out. Dealership offered to refinish and did not charge for the mount and balance. I did not want them messing with it anymore so I polished out about 95%.

And yes I would be mad. And yes, they should do something about it. And yes, you can mount rims without scratching then. I bet Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari dealerships pay a little bit more attention to mounting tires. It can be done...
