We might have our first weekend without rain/below freezing temps for a while and I am hoping to get out on the boat for a bit on Sunday. Excited to try out the magnet as well as the new baitcaster rod I got for Christmas!

 

What happens if the 1300# magnet sticks on something too heavy to lift? Do you lose the magnet at that point? My barber was telling me about mag fishing but he talks so much i didnt get a chance to ask that part.

 

I would assume you lose it, which is why I got the 330 lb. It won't attract stuff from as far away, but I am just beginning and interested in seeing what comes up.

 

depends on your rope and if you are in a boat. It might just be stuck! or swamp your boat. I got a 250lb pull magnet, so that should be plenty for what I need or care to drag up.

 

I would definitely mark the spot of something I couldn't pull up or so heavy it broke the rope.
But even the smallest items filled with water are heavy AF!
I would think a small electrical winch from say harbor freight would work well if on a boat.

 

When people ask this very question and are starting out, I always tell/ask them this:
1) tone only or do you want something with a VDI (Visual Discrimination Indicator... it has numbers, bar graphs, etc for telemetry information of said target).
2) what do you plan on accomplishing in finding? Meaning, one has to understand that, I'd say about +90% of finds is trash. No matter how good and/or expensive your MD'r is, you are still going to find quite a bit of trash either way. This doesn't bother some people and to some it is very annoying because they spent good money on a "heater" (i.e. metal detector)
3) do you want to water hunt as well? If so, fresh, salt, or both? This will dictate what MD'r you should get as a VLF MD'r will NOT work in "salty" water due to the minerals that will just wreak havoc with your VLF machine. A PI machine (i.e. Pulse Induction) is good for both fresh/salt water, but these are 99% tone only type machines as there really is no "discrimination"... so to speak. I don't really fully know how to explain a PI machine other than they can be hard to learn with for sure. I have a Garrett Infinity LS and got it for salt water hunting, but I just don't spend enough time with it as much as I would like... anyways...
4) this is a hard one, but one of the last questions mainly to ask... how much are you willing to spend on to start with? The Tesoro Compadre is a very popular MD'r that people start out with. I don't have one, but it just speaks for itself in the MD'ing world!!! I started out with the Garrett ACE250 and have quite the fun with it and never regretted buying it. There are, most definitely, Tesoro Zealots out there that practically bash on just about ALL of the other MD'ing manufacture companies... especially Garrett. Me, that mindset is pretty damn F'N childish. If you like your detector then that is all good and that is all that is needed. Right? I've found some pretty interesting things with my 250 and again, very happy hunting with it.

Finally, with that said above, there are plenty of good starter machines out there and these are some of the most basic questions that you should be asking yourself.

For now, I hope this helps before making that purchase. Do a little bit more research on the different types, how to properly "dig a plug", etc etc etc.

Anyone been out and about dragging your magnets?

 

I’ve watched videos like 2 years ago about people doing it and some shallow diving recovering a bunch of different things. Was thinking about doing it last year just never got around to it. Might give it a go ahead this year.

Question to anyone who does it: what is a good size magnet for someone doing this out of a kayak? Mostly I’ll probably be in the canal. Afraid of hitting a gas pipe or something and not being able to get it off, or flipping the kayak.

 

I went fishing the other day but I didnt take my magnet I need to put that in my fishing stuff so I dont forget it.

 

Im new to it also but it depends, Id say get a magnet that isnt too powerful 100-150lb pull. If you do latch on to something big at least you can take it off.

 

They rate them with polished steel 1/2 “ thick. So thin metal or rusted metal the magnet won’t be nearly as strong. So I’m thinking of getting something a bit bigger just so it will catch an object that maybe is more rounded or doesn’t have a lot of surface area. Plus depending on what it is, and how long it’s been there it could be fairly rusted up which will have less attraction and pulling power.

 

I have, but in areas that are not frequented that often. Actually caught a bunch of pebbles and sediment that apparently are high in Fe content, but nothing more than a few pieces of old fencing and fish hooks. I plan to take it to a few areas that have some historical significance, but weather has been a little too cold.

 

Yea, I’m sure most of what people pull up is pure garbage. I can see a bunch of fishing lures in some spots. Maybe if you roll into an area around the hood you’ll pull up a stolen ditched gun or something and a bunch of shopping carts

 

Bridges and down river from bridges are real hot spots.
Not sure about lakes and ocean... but look for areas where it's common for idiots to dump stuff. Typically it will have easy access and capability of leaving in a hurry.
