2019 TRD-OR Poor MPG

I have a 2019 TRD-OR and I've been getting poor gas mileage. I've recently been driving out of town for a class during the week so my miles have been almost all highway. I'm averaging about 15/highway and 12/city. I was concerned about this so I contacted my Toyota dealer and was told that these trucks have a 'break-in period' of about 5k miles and then I'll see it running at the rated MPG's. I've been looking around and I can't find any info on this. I'm right at 4k miles now, just a little afraid I may be doing some harm somewhere if this 'break-in period' is BS...

 

What's your average hwy speed? Anything over 70mph will start to kill your mpgs.

 

Do you have any mods? What part of the country do you live in? How fast do you go on the highway? My MPG’s drop significantly when I go over 70. There are a lot of factors in MPG that’ll yield different results than what are advertised. Best I ever got was 19 at stock, now I get around 16 highway and 14 in town.

I’m only at 1300 miles and milage is getting better ~18 combined

 

I was seeing 17 city 20-22 highway with 1k miles on my Sport 2wd. The "break-in" period is 500 miles before towing then afterwards they say the transmission is learning your driving habits. I usually have mine is S mode, so it hasnt learned anything from me.
You are in 2wd right?

 

I had to make the trip in 4H a couple times, but strangely that didn't make a difference. I go 80mph on the freeway, and its bone stock except mudflaps and a tonneau cover.

 

4H will reduce MPG, and 80MPH is what’s killing your MPG. The truck isn’t much the issue, it’s your driving. You can’t expect to go that fast and get advertised MPG’s in any car.

 

I travel about 80 every day at a distance of almost 40 miles. I usually get 21-22 mpgs. Sometimes even 23.

i'm on stock tire size, run light (no major armor, just sliders), and have the OVTune for MT on 4.30's. i drive over 80 daily and consistently land 16-18mpg. under 16 only if i'm around town and driving like i'm on crack. OVTune helps with mileage and performance both.

 

I've heard this from several people. That's part of the source of my concern.

 

You gotta baby the gas on these trucks, I get 21-22 but never go over 2K RPMS. If you drive it hard you pay for it.

 

Mine is a 2wd SR5 with under 1k miles. I was getting 24 mpg stock.

I'm at 21 now with 265/75r16 wildpeaks tires and level kit. I drive at 65mph though. I usually stay on the right lanes just cruising. Yes I drive like a grandma but we have trucks not sports cars.

 

if i just drive the thing how i do, then i get about 17mpg.

if i really try to conserve, light on the throttle especially uphill, stay under 50% throttle, and am super consistent about it on the whole drive, then i'll get up to 19. if i tried much harder i would probably reach 20. but i don't drive like a grandma so fuck that. these trucks are super sensitive with mileage, and it seems to be from throttle and aero sensitivity. if you push just a bit over the line it sucks gas like crazy.

 

Your terrain and being above 65-70mph will kill fuel economy in any generation Tacoma.

I am on 33” tires and get between 12.5-14.5 since moving back east after getting 14.5-16~ in Hawaii. It’s all terrain and speed.

 

Strangely I get worse mpgs when driving like an elderly person. I think these trucks were designed to drive somewhere in between. Dont be afraid to pedal it but dont put your foot down either. At least from my experience.

 

yeah it's weird. i have also noticed that if i run higher rpm on the motor AND stay light on the throttle that's where the best mpg is. if i'm still light on the throttle but stay at lower rpm the whole time, worse mpg. and of course more throttle and higher rpm and you're sucking gas. seems keeping above 2 or 2.5k and consistently light on the throttle is the most efficient range.

 

How old is an elderly person?

My Pro 6MT lifetime average 19.13 in 80k miles

My SR 4banger, 21.8 average, 15 k miles

 

It’s def the way you drive. I average between 16-18 city and highway, but that’s cause I drive like an ass. When the lady borrows my truck she gets 18-22 it’s kinda crazy. Being in 4wd never affected my mileage on the last truck but couldn’t tell you on this one since I haven’t had to use it

 

Agree with everything here except “you can’t expect to go that fast and get advertised MPG’s in any car.”, as my wife’s MB GL550 (bi-turbo) routinely gets its best MPG around 85 MPH. The Tacoma however, is like a train boxcar... too much parasitic drag at highway speeds.
