2019 NorCal Camping, Wheeling, Shenanigans and Don Conquered The Rubicon

I found this guy stranded on my up to UTC, not sure where his buddies were. He snapped a rear axle shaft, his tire/axle was behind the back of his Jeep when we found him. Not sure how he managed that with how little traction there was out there.

Decided to help him out, I found a log and we ratchet straped it to his axle and pulled it all the way back to Georgetown. One of the more exciting recoveries I've been part of.

The disappointing part is that a group from FB that claims to be a rescue group helped get him into that situation then left him there on their way to UTC... Dicks.

Still a fun trip.

 

I saw him in GT on are way out. Interesting recovery. but again anther strike for the nor cal 4X4 recovery group. Every time ive encountered these morons their blocking the road for hrs to do a simple recovery. only to point the poor dumb fucks farther then they should. Along with half their crew with stock rigs. And at 25psi. My first question . did you air down? IF your not willing to go down to 10 psi or less, stay home.

 

That's why I wheel with a very select group of guys. We have each others backs no matter what happens. All of us know how to recover. All of us know how to wrench. All of us get along even when the shit hits the fan. I'm sure a lot of other guys can relate.

It seems the new motto on FB and Instascam is "Every rig left behind." Glad you where there to lend that guy a hand.

 

You must have been driving the taco I drooled over in GT after we pulled him into town.

I was pleased with the ski idea, it was pretty efficient.

 

It all sucks for everyone. All of us that live up here in the mountains cant even go out on the weekends to wheel cause everyone from down below come up here to recreate. We have to take days off in the middle of the week just to go drive a trail that is 10min from our house.

Even daily tasks fucking suck, like today I couldnt even make it the store for weekly grocery shopping cause everyone and there mom was plugging all the secondary roads trying to play in the snow. You get back down to the valley and there are 50 stores and a hundred ways to get to them, up here there is one way out of the small towns. But I choose to live here, so I deal with it.

I went to a spot last weekend where all I saw were the guy I was with and a handful of old yotas and jeeps on 40’s having zero issues in the 2-3 feet of snow. I personally got stuck like 8-10 times and either used maxtrax or my winch but no on else was around for me to get in the way of.

Now that I’m thinking of it everyone keep talking about MET and UTC and find other spots where people don’t go (just don’t talk about them). That way everyone will keep going to those two places and leave the other ones alone.

Actually, Boca is no secret, either. Like MET, or UTC. But it's currently no shit show.

 

Those citiots I call them and yes I live in the woods too. I hate the fact they really are in the way of daily life for mountain living. And the do plug it up to "wreck create!"

 

This is what happens if you do any moderate wheeling in a YJ, TJ or any other Jeep with a rear Dana 35. That axle is brittle as glass and it’s held in with a c-clip so when it snaps, bye bye wheel.

 

My parents driveway. I got stuck going up and crawl control sucks in the snow. Im not really sure when it’ll ever be useful. I got an OR though for the rear locker. That helped me get u stuck and to the top.

As a 3rd gen owner on a mostly stock setup, where would you guys recommend somewhere that I wouldn't get stuck and be a nuisance? (Not asking for super secret squirrel trails, just somewhere to get my feet wet)

I'm not a wheeler, but at some point I'd like to see what the truck can do.

Also yes, the amount of OvERlAnDErS I see with their 2k tent on their trucks increases by the day down here in the Bay Area.

Yeah my group is all toys, most on tons, but we have spare D35 shafts back at the trailer cause it is the most common trail plug.

 

Phone posting and drinking can make for some interesting grammar,spelling, and venting.

 

Last rubicon run my teenage son had to walk next to a cherocar and kick the back wheel into the housing for .5 of a mile so we could at least get it to a relatively flat place so we could repair it. The owner didnt want to fuck up the paint or I would have just strapped my hilift handle between the rear bumper and door sill and had it hold it in.

In 2001(hard to remember back then) we were pulling stock rigs out of UTC everyrun. For summer wheeling, the con at least had gatekeeper,and fordycehad river crossings so that helped with unprepared rigs.
