You can say no and just have the regular Toyota warranty.

Call up the dealer pretending to be the owner of a TRD Pro 4Runner and ask how much it is to change the oil. They have stock skid plates. I’m assuming so does the Tacoma TRD Pro.

Where in your warranty paperwork does it say the dealer has to be the on doing the service?
Also why would anyone buy a lifetime powertrain warranty?
Hard to believe they require dealers to do the service but they won’t void the warranty over larger tires.

If it may not function as designed why wouldn't the warning light stay on?

You are not buying anything. It's a OFFER. If you let them charge $81 for a oil change every 10k miles you get the lifetime warranty. You can say no. No money involved by the purchaser. just the $81 fee to change oil.

Each vehicle is calibrated to the tire size on the Vehicle. If you swap to a different size the dealer says a error light will appear.

They don't void the warranty. They say it will show a error to the sym. on the dash. They are just letting you know it will have a permanent light on unless you turn that sym. off.

    That doesn’t sound correct.

They are under no contractual obligation if you and them do not have a contract.

    I doubt this whole scheme.
    Lifetime powertrain warranties are expensive.

Exactly (it’s just an offer)... so for an upfront cost of 4 oil changes (assuming you don’t drive more that 10K p/yr, and the first 2 are “free”), then you’re paying $324 plus another $81 for each 1yr/10K to protect the power train past 60/60000... value would only be realized if you plan to keep the vehicle much beyond the standard warranty period. Seems like cheap insurance for those going to 200K or so... I trade/sell at the 4 to 5 year point, so wouldn’t work for me.

EDIT: At the 200K point, you would of paid out close to $1500 in oil changes (but you also have been getting oil changes)... so not a bad deal at that point.

My buddy just lifted his 18’, 3” with 33’s and he has none of those issues mentioned. Skid plate is BS. You’re paying for an oil change, not for how many laborers it takes to put on the skid plate. If it takes them two people to install the skid plate I imagine it must take them four people to properly align your oil filter..

LEXUS and TOYOTA dealer all offer free lifetime warranty if they do the oil changes. It's dealer specific.

I love that my toyota dealer is so chill. Dealerships like this are ridiculous scrounging every penny they can out of ya. Two people to put on a skid.... jesus christ. I put all my skids on myself.

These are generally scams, they will get you the second you screw up and have oil changed somewhere else, or any service for that matter any where else.

They are also banking on you not owning the truck for more than 5 years or 60k miles.

You can keep doing oil changes with them, but keep in mind they will try to blame you on everything. Also, they will charge you for everything they can.

6 Quarts of Mobil One plus a Toyota oil filter would be about $55 right? maybe $50.

@wawuzit the TRD skid does use spacers and some long bolts. I don't recall the exact length, but they could have been about 5".

My dealer wanted to charge me $89 for a windshield wiper blade change on my last free oil change:rofl: they will say absolutely anything to get your money. I always feel bad for the people that get sucked into replacing all their fluids and filters when they don’t know better and get robbed by dealers.

No one will answer this question to see if the dealer is telling the truth. Does the TRD skid plate have long spacers that have to be lined up? Dealer says my 2019 has seven bolts and seven spacers if you get the TRD Toyota skid plate.

Do you have a signed contract with them spelling out what they will and will not cover?

If you have no legal contract you have no warranty. They are not required to do anything not in writing.
Warranties are major money makers for dealers and warranty companies. They make more profit margin off warranties than they do vehicles. Lifetime powertrain warranties cost thousands. I doubt they will provide such coverage in exchange for lifetime $81 oil changes.

I’m assuming you have the stock skid plate that comes on all Tacoma’s but the pro, if so no it doesn’t. It bolts right up. I have no idea what they’re talking about. I just changed mine at 30k and it just has four standard bolts.

EDIT: I stand by corrected. It seems other users report 5” long bolts for the skid plate.

Then how does a dealer recalibrate it when they mod a factory truck and put 285s on it?
