Excellent idea, that way you assume all legal liability for changes to the vehicle. Get a good umbrella policy..!

OP, after reading through 3+ pages, you should do all maintenance at the dealer and you SHOULD NOT own any tools. Not making fun, I am serious.
1- what model truck you have? PRO, Limited, OR, Sport, SR5...
2- stock skid (2 pieces) on OR has 4 bolts.
3- stock skid on PRO has 6 bolts and 4 spacers. Front spacers are shorter than the mid ones. No spacers in the back.
4- PRO skid does NOT install over any other skid.
5- yes, is a bit of a pain to reinstall the PRO skid, heavy, bulky and need to play with the spacers.
6- no need to remove the skid plate, has ports to drain the oil and replace the filter.
If you decide to do it yourself, ask somebody to show you and watch over your shoulder when you do it.

There is a access panel door with for bolts for the oil change on the trd pro skid plate. The stock plate only had 2 bolts in the back. The front part just hung on 2 tabs.

Didn’t say only a shop can do work... just made a suggestion (an honest one, and a smart one by the way).

What the hell did I just read?!

OP you asked for comments, meaning you think something is off with what you were told. Then you go out of your way to defend the dealer. None of this makes sense. The dealer or your need to defend them.

Tire size and lift will not effect ANY sensors. IF you switch wheels to aftermarket, simply move the TPMS over and no issue. IF you decide to run a higher or lower PSI, reset the sensor (little button under dash).

Factory skid plates have access built in as others mentioned.

The whole oil change drive train thing may be a local policy or whatever but that is for you alone to do the cost analysis and decide if it’s a good deal for you.

Considering all the other info, the service writer or whoever you spoke to seems misinformed or shady as hell. Talk to another person, if they say all the same things, then the dealer is not trustworthy.

No. It replaces the factory tin. It is a simple install and has an access panel for oil changes.

Are you sure you are allowed to comment here? I thought all people could do is spread BS. I have no doubt there will be 10 posts asking about mounting the TRD Pro plate over the factory tins to follow though.

One of the first things you are taught when being trained as a sales rep, or service writer is "fake it till you make it"

The employee you spoke with clearly hasn't "made it" yet.

It is perfectly legal to require servicing by the factory authorized service shop...as long as all maintenance is free. Other than that it's a test to see how gullible the customer is and how deeply he will allow you to penetrate his, ummm, wallet.

I don’t think it would apply in this case. The manufacturer’s warranty the vehicle is sold with is not contingent upon servicing by the dealer. The dealer’s own extended warranty seems to essentially be a separate warranty agreement entered into with each additional oil change you pay for.

I use Dave Edwards Toyota in Spartanburg. Oil changes for 49 bucks with factory oil/filters. They have always been great. Turned my seatbelt chime off with no questions. Performed all TSB's with a simple request. I'm happy with them.

First. I've been in Construction/Maintenance for 40 years, I've got 5 tool boxes full of tools.
Second. When a service manager says it takes 2 people because it's hard to line up bolts /spacers and hold a heavy skid plate without a lift .I believe him.
Third If this just boils down to $20 or less to let the dealer do everything while I pig out on donuts in his lobby...he's got the job.
That's a GREAT price on the oil. I think Walmart was $7.49 a quart.
