So, my truck is 21 years old next month and has 166,XXX miles. It is going to probably need a new clutch someday. I’m getting old and I believe the clutch in my truck is aggravating my knee. Instead of getting a new clutch when the time comes, would it be a crazy idea to just replace it with an automatic?

Would something like this be a “plug and play” type of thing, or would my truck require all kinds of modifications to make this install possible?

You’ll need a lot of modifications to get this to work. New ECU, transmission harness, re-weld the transmission crossmember, etc. It is far easier to go to Manual from Automatic rather than the other way around.

Yep, that’s the right answer. If only I liked the new Tacomas..

I’d have a heck of a time trying to find an automatic first gen as nice as mine, I imagine.
