Does anyone think it would be a waste of money to throw on a 3inch suspension lift with some bigger tires and make a few other mods to a 2.7L? Will the loss of power be so much that it wouldn’t be worth it at all? Any insight helps. Thank you

You could always put steeper gears in if you feel that you would lose too much power.

You’re going to get positive and negative comments on here, some good some worthless... best to do a cost benefit analysis to help you decide. What are you trying to achieve, and how much will that “achievement” benefit you in the long run. Can those funds better be utilized on practical mods, or to simply payoff the truck early... it’s your money. If you have a lot of disposable funds, spend away and enjoy.

If your going to do a full on at-GVWR-capacity travel rig you might find yourself wanting a different engine, but the 4-banger should do just fine with just minor mods like 265/75 16's, skid plates, roof top tent.

What matters is your purpose (use) and your budget.

You can roll skinny 33's with no lift.

We don't even know what you have (other than a 2.7), much less how you want to use it.

2.7 is a great motor but needs the correct gearing. With a 3” lift I assume your trying to fit 285s or similar and it will definitely need gears to maintain its power

Probably the best way to put it. Once you add +1000lbs to it you'll notice it. Just a lift and tires is negligible in my opinion.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses, I figured eventually I’d have to regear and then go from there. I’m really trying to make a travel rig that includes a midrise shell with a sleeper (already have that), I’ll throw a kayak and mountain bike up top pretty frequently, but then want a little more off-road capability with a 2-3 inch lift and I’m fine with 265 tire but would prefer the 285’s. It seems my mpg might actually reach single digits haha but my biggest concern would the truck just not being able to handle all that. I have a 2017 sr5 AC (2.7). Had I known exactly what I wanted to do prior to getting the truck probably would’ve gone a different route, but we all make mistakes right. Thanks for all the help

I’m all for a regear and even supercharger my knowledge is just pretty limited there. I don’t mind spending the money that would equate to OR cause then it’ll just be unique having all that at the same price point

There are two things to keep in mind: #1 as Tacoma3rdGen noted above, is to do a cost-benefit analysis to find out if what you want to do makes sense for you; #2 is to always remember that the original Toyota trucks (and most of those currently on the roads in other countries) are 4 cylinder trucks - the truck will do whatever you ask of it, you must simply make sure that you mod it such a way as to make it possible.

The MT probably handles mods a little better. How do you feel about the 4cyl/Auto currently? Like Anchovy said there is always forced induction if you find you need more power.

2.7L on 3" lift up front, 1" out back, 295/70/17s, 4.88 gears, and LCE header. Truck is very much a joy to drive still. You can add as much weight as you feel necessary, just regear and help the motor turn those bigger tires and push that extra weight. I have a 5speed for reference, but if i had an auto, id still do the 4.88s (but id strongly consider 5.29s since the Autos have a better overdrive)

With nothing I never thought there was a lack of power, doesn’t get me 0-60 in 5 seconds but it was more than okay. With the shell, I noticed a good drop on acceleration but no difference once I was up to speed. If I switch on ECT with the shell it goes back to feeling normal again which I’ve been doing so that’s nice. With the bigger tires that’s the story I’m trying to figure out haha

You can also swap out your stock filter to an aFe pro dry one. I noticed a little bit of throttle response increase after swapping them out. It's also washable/reusable

Thats looking great I’m going for essentially the same thing. But sounds good thanks for the reply, I figured 4.88 was the way to go once all is said and done but I’ll look into the 5.29s. Can you elaborate more on the LCE header how it helped and what exactly is going on there. Thanks again man that truck looks like a great way to get away
