Suspension lift question - For all those who have installed Bilstein for a 2” lift, is it necessary to AAL to raise the rear as well? Or is AAL just to haul heavy stuff? I’m confused about how the rear lifts work.

I’m looking at 6112 for the front and possibly 5160 on rears (or something comparable) for my 2018 TRD OR that’s a daily driver and off road quite frequently. Do I need to AAL as well to level the truck or does the 5160 suffice?

My intent is to get an economical lift so I can add 33” tires as that would make my off pavement runs a little bearable and eventually build with accessories such as bumpers, etc. down the road. I would appreciate any advise especially in regards to how the rear lifts work.

So I just upgraded my suspension about a month ago. I did 5100s all around with your AAL in the rear. I have the front shocks set to the 2" setting but I am still using the stock OR coils and haven't upgraded them (yet). Am I ok running this setup for now until I upgrade the coils?

The rear shocks don’t give you ride height. It’s for dampening. You will need to lift the rear and there’s 2 ways, the right way with leaf springs (AAL or new leaf pack), and the frowned upon way, blocks. This will level you out since factory rake is about 1”. AAL that requires removing the overload spring in the OEM leaf pack actually makes the payload lower aka less heavy hauling.

You’re ok technically if you’re comfortable with the ride. It’ll be a little more on the stiffer side since it’s on the higher notch. If you get new springs, you can lower the preload and get the same lift height which can improve your ride.

So in that case, do I even need to swap my rear original shocks? I could just AAL with 6112 on fronts, correct?

Technically yes but you should check to see the travel length you have on the original shocks vs swapping it out. I guess if you’re not planning to offroad at all and don’t mind the ride quality then it wouldn’t matter. I would recommend at least getting the 5100s.

Can I use 2 different size lift blocks on the rear? To compensate for the "Taco Lean"....
The passenger side is around 3/4" higher than the driver side. Can I put a 1.5" block on passenger side and a 2" block on driver side?

I’ve been eyeballing the ADS setup you went with. How you liking it so far? Have you had a chance to test it offroad?

    It’s really nice. Very spendy.

For what I do it may be a tad overkill but the adjustability is nice for towing. They are racing shocks so driving 45+ on forest and desert roads they seem to get smoother and more “cloud-like” the faster you go

The Bilstein 8112 kit that Headstrong sells is awesome too. I probably could have gotten away with the 6112, but hindsight is 20/20.

Check out the Bilstein 8112 technology it’s pretty nice too

Yes. The 90021’s. My SPC ball joints wore out in 10 months...

Emus are designed for heavy load bearing overlanders (I didn’t know this, but it makes sense coming from Landcruisers in Australia).

If you want a cush ride go Bilsteins or some nice coilovers with a #650-700 spring depending on your front weight.

I have 888s. About 20,000km on them (12,500 miles). I wouldn’t say that I have been hard on them. Also running ome soft ride shocks

3rd gen specific Bilstein 6112s set at 4 and 3 in the front and 5160s in the rear. No AAL, leaf packs, or blocks in the rear. Goal was to level out the front to the rear stock height. First day the front was about 3/4 inch higher than the rear after alignment (bro lean). Today I measured, 3 days later and about 100 miles of driving, the front is less than 1/4 inch higher. Hopefully with a few more miles the fronts will settle to about even or a slight rake. If the front drops a little more, I'd say I achieved my desired lift. Will be adding either SumoSprings or air bags to aid when towing.

100% agree. I went on an impulse YOLO buy and put the 2.5 inch pro comp leveling kit. My ride is stiffer than my first dance with a girl. I should have waited and done it all correct. It looks amazing though...obviously.. but would love it to be more comfortable.

I’ll be swapping it all out for bilsteins end of year and get ripped by wife. But I’ll do it right the second time and be done with it. Well at least with suspension

Are there any disadvantages to the 5100s set at the lowest setting with 885s? The original post makes it sound like 885s will eventually start to sag .

So with that being the case, if I upgrade my coils to OME 885, where would you recommend I set my preload to achieve the same lift? I do plan to install a SOS Streamline bumper in the future along with a winch possibly.

Not sure what would be best since I haven’t installed those coils before. Definitely plan for some sagging after the bumper though. Heard pretty good support from @HeadStrong Off-Road so you might want to ask them on the specifics for the 5100s. I had them before but with stock springs before I went with Kings.

By any chance, does anyone know how to do this for a 3rd gen? (not a 2nd gen)
