Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
It's for your air bag system. SRS = Supplementary Restraint System

It could be a warranty thing. If not, anything SRS related is normally mucho dinero.

My light came on a couple months ago and I scanned the code, 1801 which is an open circuit on the drivers side. I got it checked out and it was my clock spring that broke (Toyota calls it a Spiral Cable). This is a fairly common problem it costs about $200 for the part, I drove around about a month with it on. It means the airbag won't deploy if I meet in a major accident because their is no power to the airbag.

Did you replace this yourself? Any write-up on how to do it? Mine has been on for about 30,000 miles. They (toyota)said there is an open in my spiral cable. Looks like I have the same issue.

^^No, haven't replaced mine as yet. From what I understand it should be fairly simple. You take the steering wheel off and remove the defective cable assembly, the trick is how you put the steering back on but someone told me the assembly has the instructions on a sticker stating how to position everything. The spiral cable assembly is like a tape measure consisting of two wires (airbag and horn) and when the steering turns the cable extends and vice-versa. You have to position everything so when you make a full lock you don't overextend the cable. I've read a thread on another forum where a guy soldered his broken cable back together but I wouldn't recommend that. I found two links that should be helpful :

Obviously off topic for the tacoma -- but the same thing happened in my wife's honda civic. I got the code scanned, (forgot the number, its written down somehwere...), and per service guidelines it said that it was a pressure leak in the emissions system. Commonly this light comes on when a driver forgets to replace the gas cap after refueling, or there is a leak pre 02 sensor in the exhaust. I've had the code flashed on the car twice and it keeps coming back on. I haven't noticed a difference in performance or mileage or whatever, so I've just left it alone.

Dont know if this is the same for our trucks, but get it scanned, it may no be as devastating..

I guess I can stop wondering now. Mine came on at 60k. I'm at 88k, maybe $200 is worth it though.

I thought I was the only one driving around with my airbag light on.

I just did the clockspring on my 99 Passat.. other than the fear of playing with the airbag it was a snap.. took about 1.5 hours to do. Got a used clockspring off www.car-part.com for $100 ($500 new from VW!!!) - then just had to get the Airbag computer reset so it would scan the system and all was fine.

I would totally do it myself now on any vehicle.

That will trigger the CEL, not the SR5 warning light

Got in the truck this morning on my way to work, start it up, drive off, and the "SRS" warning light came on. Looked up the indicator light in the manual and it says "Take vehicle to Toyota dealer immediately." So after work I drive directly to the dealer. My truck is over 36,000 miles and my Toyota Extra Care will be used for the inspection. Dealer says there isn't anything they can do and I should bring it first thing tomorrow morning when Extra Care is open. If I go through Extra Care they charge a $50 deductible. What could be the cause of the light coming on?

I was just flipping through my warranty info booklet on my '09, and noticed that the seat belts and airbag system are specifically covered up to 5 years and 50,000 miles. The spiral wire assembly is not listed in the "what is not covered" section, so it should be covered if you aren't over the warranty limits.

Camper top with racks, Custom fogs behind lower bumper. Interior LED lighting, Rock Lights, Hella 500s with upraged bulbs behind black billet grill, AAL, Front 5100s
 I've been driving around with my airbag light on assuming that it wasn't covered on my 07, but if that is the case I'm in luck

    Cheers Brother!

One thing: If you had a bad seat sensor would that trigger the airbag light as well? If so why not just bypass it?
