Tried again today strapped it to a tree so I can get more tug out of it. And its stuck at this point I'm guessing the used rear I bought is bent. Its definatly something on the inside I got the backing plate to separate from the axle.

Looks pretty corroded. Was it always sealed with oil in it?

What kind of lift is needed for clearing 33s? Is it possible with just the above ?

I have about a 2.25" inch lift in the front, about as high as I can go without tearing CV boots (learned the hard way a few times). But a lift only does so much, to clear bigger tires properly you need the right wheels and a hammer/angle grinder for trimming and bending.

I know you got a bunch of replies that you just need the pinch weld mod. Here are some photos of how I went about it if you haven't figured it out already:

(from my build thread): Finally, the Pinch Weld Mod

@Blackdawg was of course right on with his comment about the spacers. Pushing a wide wheel (and even wider tire) out that far is going to wreak havoc on your fender (and flare).

Check out the link below for a description and diagrams of what's going on.

Yep, this. Well, some cutting for 34's probably. Depending on backspacing and whatnot.

Exactly. A suspension lift doesn't actually change anything except where the wheel sits when you're at rest. When you're fully stuffed, the clearance is the same whether you have that lift or not.

A good discussion of all this (with diagrams) and description of what "modifications" are necessary with different tire sizes (and widths + backspacing, etc.) here:

What size tires fit my lifted Tacoma?

I know it's not very popular in the Tacoma community, but it's pretty common I hear in other circles (such as T4Rs) to do a small body lift to help clear larger tires, such as a 1" BL or less. I wonder if anyone on here has tried?

I wouldn't consider it unless I was going bigger than 33s but that won't be happening anytime soon

Plenty of folks have added a 1" bl to clear tires.

For 33s it's pointless IMO as you can easily get them to fit will a little effort.

Also. Lift doesn't help clear tires. A suspension lift just changes where in the travel the truck sits. It doesn't stop your tire from eating the pinch weld when you go over a bump or rock or something.
