We got a dusting of snow (1.5”) the other day. Not enough for me to drag the tractor out and plow. Frequently with storms like this, I’ll use my beater Subaru to just pack the snow down to try to keep a good base on the gravel driveway.

Well, I was driving the truck today so I figured I’d use that before parking it. As I backed up, I saw this in my tire track on top of the snow. It was greasy, I cleaned it for better pics. I briefly looked under there, and am about to change and really crawl around under it, but maybe one of you guys or gals will be able to narrow my search.

Almost looks like the rubber boot that goes over the plug part of the headlight

It’s pretty small, and no recent headlight work.

There is also the potential that it came off one of the two Subarus we own, but I find that to be less likely given that it was on top of the snow, in my wheel track. I’ll check my wife’s car when she gets home. Thanks for the reply.A6DF59FF-8E48-4061-A5CD-8D4B58CDCAEE.jpg

It looks like the base of a tie rod or ball joint boot? But I'm not sure how it would fall off like that without it being torn...

Wow, it sure does. I recently replaced the steering rack, not sure how I’d have put the ballpoint(s) back on with no boot. Definitely would have noticed. Maybe the alignment shop? I’ll go back out and have a look.

Hmm, looking again, that area of the ball joint looks to be metal? Maybe just coincidence

Well, although it looks like it, it’s not from the ball joints or tie rods on the truck. Not from headlights either. Still a mystery.

That’s not our flooring (wish it was!) it’s our dining room table. However, it’s made from 100+ yr old hardwood flooring from a midwestern factory. We love it! It’s 9’ long x 3’4” wide. We seat 10 people with ease, can fit 20 people if I bring up another table from the basement. (Hope we never have to do that!) Here’s a better pic:

Edit: we are still furnishing the living room that’s attached to the dining room. Don’t use it often except for me and the wife just to sit with no TV. The carpet guy screwed up the joint between the two rooms, you can see it pulling up if you look carefully. Drives me nuts, but not enough to fix it. Eventually, I’ll put down hardwood so it won’t matter.

Seal to a cap of some sort...brake fluid, power steering, clutch, ect?

Seems just like the one in a brake fluid res cap.

Checked, all are in place. I’m starting to think it may be from my wife’s car. She won’t be home until late, so I’ll check within the next few days. I appreciate the suggestions!

Did the new steering rack come with the rubber boots on each end of the rack? Is it possible that this is the torn end off of one of the old boots?

New rack came with new boots, just had to put my TREs on, old boots were still in perfect shape so I don’t think so.

Definitely not new, was covered in dirty grease. I cleaned it up, looks new but definitely isn’t.

Our newest vehicle is my ‘07 Tacoma. I gotta look over my wife’s car. Possibly from that.

Anyway, I really appreciate all the suggestions!
