So I ordered a brush guard for my ‘19 Off Road Taco. There is a screen on it that will obscure the Toyota emblem on the grill which houses the radar sensor.

I’m wondering if anyone knows whether I can cut out a section of the screen just large enough that it won’t cover up the emblem which houses the sensor unit so it’ll still work?

I was watching it today and took careful notice of when the sensor activated as cars would merge onto my lane. It seems to me it throws a pretty narrrow beam several car lengths ahead. Any thoughts as to whether or not my idea would work?

Sorry if this has been discussed. I’m a noob here and couldn’t find anything.

It’s on order. It’ll be a week or so before they can even install it. But I’ll definitely post some when it’s done...

I don't think this idea will work. the sensor doesn't throw a "beam" just straight in front of it. it actually does angles and up/down as well. plus if you are putting an obstruction near it to begin with, the sensor will probably sense it's there and go off. I would pass on this if it were me.

Truth is I really don’t care about the sensor at all. I’d rather have the brush guard. I’ve been driving since I was 16 and am 56 now. Never needed any sensors before, don’t need one now. It can just be shut off and just driven like any other vehicle correct?

nope, it can't be shut off. you can disable it and the light will stay lit up in your face all the time. I have the same system on my truck and I don't need it or like it, but have to live with it.

WTF?! Jeezum crow, pretty soon they’ll be putting these things on rails and lining them up like kiddy rides. Why in the hell didnt they design it so you can turn it on and off like the stupid lane sensor? I wonder if there’s a fuse you can pull specifically for that sensor? If not I see a piece of electrical tape covering up the warning light in my future...

Either that or I just won’t use the cruise control.

haha, I agree. a piece of tape won't cut it. it completely takes over the center part of your gauge cluster (where the speedo/info is). so unless you are just gonna use the dial tach and speedo, no dice. sorry man. this has actually been discussed on here. it is a safety feature and Toyota really don't want it disconnected.

what kind of brush guard did you order? do you still have the stock grille?

unplug it and drive down the road. if you can live with the instrument cluster like that, then let her ride.

You can override the accident avoidance system by holding the cruise control button down till the system bypasses the avoidance system and goes to traditional cruise control. I am not an expert and this is covered in your owners manual.

As far as front grill accessories I don't know if this would work.

Like I said, I just won’t use cruise control. I hardly ever do anyway even on multi state trips.

I just bought the truck on Friday. Ordered the guard yesterday from a local 4x4 shop. They’ll install it next week. It bolts to the frame under the bumper. Powder coated steel tubing that protects the whole front end; headlights, grill, etc. I haven’t done anything to the grille. I am in the process of plastindippingnall, the badging black though. New set KO2’s are also on order. I’ll post pics when it’s done...

I haven’t even read the manual yet. I’ve just been driving the thing like a normal truck. You almost need training course to keep up with all the gadgets and crap they put in these things. All this high tech crap doesn’t do much for me as much as some. I like the truck for its off road capability but frankly could do without all that added driving assist sensor and crap . Like I said, I’ve been driving a while. I don’t want or need the truck to do my thinking or driving for me.

Not going to get much love for brush guards around here.

Good luck with your new truck, and welcome to TW.

Thanks but why not? I’m originally from the way up in the frozen north and never had a need for them up there. Just moved to the southwest a couple years ago and down here it’s damn near a necessity if you don’t want to tear your truck all to hell...
