Sorry to be "thread cop" but please read the blog on OVTune website if you are a newbie. Doing so in place of trying to sort through 2000+ pages of this thread will bring you up to speed. It has good info about what tunes are available, or not available and detailed instructions for install.

    https://www.ovtuned.com/blogs/news/ovtune-tacoma-flash-manager-overhaul

end of "thread cop". I promise.

All I’m saying is the misfires I deal with are serious drivability issues caused by a component that has failed. These misfires turn a 4cyl into a 3cyl or 2cyl. A V6 into a 5cyl. or 4cyl. A V8 into a 7cylor a 6cyl. Etc. When one or more cylinders are not firing all hell breaks loose and you know it. The misfires I’m reading about, people seem to not even notice unless the computer monitoring software tells them it happened. So, I could be wrong. Like if you go to the dentist and he or she says “ you have a cavity” and you say “ I don’t feel like I have a cavity”. Well, Do you and it needs to be fixed or don’t you? If I decided to check for misfires and it showed them I personally wouldn’t be concerned unless it caused an actually true misfire being caused by spark or fuel. UNLESS,Mat all of a sudden posted more information on the Toyota Engine & Software explaining why it’s happening and what NEEDS to be done about it to keep the engine from catastrophic failure.

There is a big big difference between a true cylinder misfire and a calculated misfire from sensor precision.
misfires that the OBD tells you are calculated out of sensor precision and expectation.
A real, constant misfire is a dead cylinder.

If the ECU expects that from one crank trigger point to the next trigger point @ the point of combustion should take 0.0001 ms and it takes 0.00011 ms, "misfire" is reported. (basically)

Lots of people are quoting misfire number compared to OEM. It would be helpful to all (maybe even Mat) if the OEM tune being compared to was stated. I have a 2016 and had three OEM tunes. I suspect, but have not logged that the last one that many people have had good luck with addressed this along with other issues. Of course that could be TOTALLY incorrect. The latest Toyota tune might actually have more misfires on the same truck. Cannot tell from what people have posted.

Or the latest tune could show similar number of misfires, on the same Toyota tune, on the same truck. And the problem is indeed related to another component, environment, etc.

Eliminating variables is not as easy as it sounds, especially when the matrix of possibilities keeps changing and people don't include references in their posts to which OEM tune they are comparing.

    Just a quick thought.....

All I know is, I drove to work on the 87 base tune and it was fantastic.
May upgrade to the 91 "less tip-in" performance tune in the future, but for now. I'm stoked

So is your goal, to make your tunes, so the ecu gets the “with-in spec” readings at all times? If so you are a Mad Scientist. What is your favorite coffee? Thanks again for all the work. Can’t wait for 1.05 Performance for my 04B03!

Matt @OVTune. I gotta say man, you made me smile today. Just did a super easy install that resulted in an awesome upgrade to this truck. Put in the 91 performance tune and love it!

    Would be impossible.
It is definitely possible that the tune is increasing misfire counts on some trucks.
Here is what I know from testing on our R/D truck, that very low levels of knock (under half degree of retard) is sometimes picked up as 2-3 misfire counts on cylinder 1. You can verify this by watching feedback right after the counts.
Here is what else I know, some trucks, regardless of tune, never gets misfire counts as high as some report.
    Factors to consider:
    1. Toyota has a tsb for a crank sensor replacement (which is used to count misfires)
    2. These engines, from what is publicly available info, have messed up crank pulleys from a special coating that disrupts crank sensor signals.
    3. Toyota did not replace them on all trucks, even though, from public data, every truck has this special coating
    4. Trucks outside the TSB range still benefitted from replacing the CPS.
    5. Our tune could very likely create higher misfire counts from modification to ignition timing (calculated from crank sensor) with above outstanding issues in place.

The next step now, is to test a truck with excessive counts that can be repeated ( not random one day high out of the blue ), and lower ignition globally and check result.

Problem is, is that majority of truck that have this only happen under certain conditions "cold" and not repeatable from day to day.

Until we can pinpoint the exact and absolute cause, we are chasing ghosts...

Local temp junk created during install. Also can be used if you want to wipe all stuff you've downloaded through flash manager

@OVTune you have mentioned that in the future you may release performance tunes with calmed down tip in. If you do this will the new files have a different name or will they overwrite the existing files in file location we have already down loaded?

You already changed the plugs on your 3rd gen? I thought I read in the maintenance log it called for plugs at 60k - Havent got there yet, but its on my radar. I was planning on using OEM for the same reasons you mentioned. From my past experience, even with pre-grapped plugs, it is a good idea to double check the gap.
