I think thats an old wives tail. The missing is from the ecu retarding timing when it senses knock. Knock is bad. Retarding timing and running pig rich is bad. Thats the kind of stuff that hurts engines.

Yeah my main issue is the way the truck shifts/runs through gears. Always wants to jump to 6th even though I’m running 30-35. If I try to ease on the pedal to increase speed a little or increase it gradually, it shimmies 1/2 the time and feels like having an MT in too high of a gear or like its missing or stalling. The only time it shifts through the gears appropriately is if I drive aggressively through each, and even then it typically touches 4th for a split second and skips to 5/6. Definitely didn’t act this way the first few days of driving it. When I’m driving in the country at 45, any incline or decline and it’s all over the place.

I don't understand how some people are OK with this. If you average 20 mpg over the course of 100,000 miles, running high test the entire time would cost you another $2400 at today's fuel prices. That's a tough pill to swallow when the truck is supposed to run correctly on 87.

Been to the dealer, they give me the ole can't replicate, even though it's doing it as they drive it... I come from turbo vehicles so 93 is not a big deal to me, but it may be to others.

Never said I was ok with it, it just is what it is. I don't get 20 mpg's either lol.

I just did my taxes and since my truck is a company truck, its pretty easy to track, I filled up 59 times last year. I spent probably about $275 dollars more on fuel than I should have had to for the year. It's not the end of the world to me.

Did you have trouble getting them to do the update? Ive read some places are great and some don’t want to help. If it’s a programming thing, it’s super easy and seems like something they would gladly to do if you bought a truck from them.

Hello, my friend. We’ve been down this road a time or two. Would it be nice if my truck ran right off the cheap stuff? Yes, yes it would. But, it won’t. So, I buy it the good stuff and it makes my life easier. It would also be nice if my wife liked cheaper clothing, purses, accessories, shoes, and you name it, but she doesn’t. So, I get her the good stuff too. That also makes my life easier. I like it that way. Hope all is well. :)

P.S. I almost forgot, my truck apparently misses my friendly Toyota techs so it’s back in the shop again. It’s been there all week and not a peep. Three weeks last time so we will see how long this time. I developed a bad vibration after the rear differential was installed and the tranny pulled. We will see what the latest is in the next episode of “As the Taco Turns”.

I’m just kind of numb at this point. So we keep a grocery getter around for easy parking and stuff. My wife said, that new RAV4 is “cute”. She then paused and asked, who makes it? I said, Toyota does honey. She said we’ll find something else, no more Toyota’s.....

Sad but I’m thinking we are done.

Knock on wood, but my truck is still running fine. I have lifted my truck so I have no hope of getting my light throttle jitters looked at without my lift getting blamed. Other tranny issues or driveline vibes are probably off the table as well. To be fair, my stock truck was a fight to get serviced anyways.

I've made my bed as nice as I can. Now I lie down in it.

My wife's 17 Rav got rear ended last week, but that happens. Otherwise it's been perfect. Only been to the dealer for it's 2 free oil changes. Just like you'd expect from a Toyota.

Toyota did just come out with a refreshed version though.

Sorry about getting rear ended but I’m awfully gun shy now. At this point it’d be my luck that I’d get that one RAV4 that would live in the shop beside it's Tacoma sibling.

Coming up on 80k miles on my 2016 DCLB Sport and need to decide on T-SB-0062-18. I'm in Northern Virginia, so it's not high altitude and I haven't had too many stumbling issues. Truck gets pretty crappy MPG ~17. I did notice yesterday while highway driving: I'm in the left lane behind some left lane lolly gagger, there is another car in the left center lane pacing me for ~2 miles and my exit is coming up. I'm pretty irritated at this point, so I slowed down enough to get behind the car next to me so I can start getting over. I got over and smashed the gas which felt like it did not respond for over a second. Occasionally at a stop light I can feel a hesitation also. Should this TSB correct this issue and help gas mileage? I just don't want to make things worse...

It should improve your hesitation/shifting issues and there should not be any noticeable difference in MPG's. Go Skins! LOL

For all the Canadians having troubles getting their dealer to do this... I took my truck in and told them about the gear issues and advised them about the update. At first it seemed as if they were not going to do it, but either way it was on the work order. Once i picked the truck up, the tech told me that once he connected the truck with the computer it immediately prompted him to update the firmware/software. I got it done at no charge, and have to say that at first i was skeptical when people said it felt like a completely new vehicle. Well they were right, the truck feels completely different, the best way to describe it would be to say its like "half" ECT mode on (if that makes sense, just not as aggressive). Responsive from dead stop, shift points are right where they need to be and no dead spots when pressing on throttle. So far i am very happy with the new feel, i think this is how the truck was supposed to drive from the beginning. No idea about gas millage yet but i would be fine if it went up slightly as driving this truck has never felt better.

I totally agree with your post, I had my truck done a few months back and the difference is night and day compared to where it was before. We are in Vernon BC and have been very lucky that the local dealer, Vernon Toyota, has been really good at listening to me complain while doing everything they can to get me through.
I do have a question for you. How does your truck perform against those nasty Sask winds while you are out on the highway? Will it at least hold 5th gear at highway speed? On calm days will it hold 6th? Living in Sask for 11 years I know the climate there all too well. Since the last TSB update I have not yet had the chance to do any long road trips which really put this thing to the test. Thought you might be able some comment to that here.
    Cheers
