I enjoyed the subwoofers so much I wanted more! I did realize at this time that for overlanding I would need to forgo the subwoofer box and just use a simple platform. But I had some time and I was envisioning a grand sub setup that I had to see through. Back to SolidWorks to model the v2.0

I was so impressed with the SKAR amplifiers I wanted to use their subs as well.

Why do modern box builders use pocket holes (pocket hole jig) from the inside? Time.

Pre-drilling and counter sinking all those sheet rock screws takes a lot of time, also with hundreds of counter sunk holes on the outside of the box it complicates finishing (carpet or paint) the box.

I spent 2 days alone filling all the counter sunk holes with spackling and sanding, to get a smooth exterior finish. Needed the smooth finish for how I choose to coat the box.

    Merry Christmas!

My wonderful wife got me a Tepui Kukenam 3 Ruggedized for Christmas :) not a total surprise but it was because she coordinated it to showed up just before Christmas eve.

    12/2018

We had a beautiful day the day after Christmas so the wife helped me get the RTT up onto the rack. RTT on saw horses just behind truck, leaned one side on top of rack, then lifted and slid into place. Went up fairly easy.

    The install (1 day).

Didn't get any pics of this aspect of the subwoofer enclosure build. This was an absolute must. Can you imagine the energy being released on the Tacoma sheet metal back wall from 4 - Skar VVX-12v3's power by 2400 watts RMS? The technique I was using for this enclosure placement is known as a loading surface. The sealed enclosure subs fire directly into a baffle (stiff and dense as possible). This front loading technique does some interesting things acoustically it effectively gives you 12dB in gain, add that to cabin gain, it's impressive.

What you are seeing here is a 1.5" thick MDF baffle bolted to the truck in the middle and at the top via a steel bracket I fabricated. Two pieces of 0.75" MDF glued and screwed together, extremely dense. Very little acoustic energy is lost off the front of the subs when the baffle redirects the pressure wave. Baffle and steel bracket coated in Duratex.

Ok that's enough for the silly "for fun" stuff, time to get serious again about this overland build.

As you may have noticed before I am driving a lowrider at this point. I have to get a lift.

The wife and I are DINK's with good jobs but we are by no means rich. This build is extremely expensive and I had to free up a lot of funds to make this overlanding dream happen.

In some of the photos posted you may have caught a glimpse of one of my toys, a 2015 Subaru STI, I really enjoyed that car but it was very expense to own/maintain. I ended up selling it in May 2018 mainly to free up funds for this build/trip. Maybe I'll get another one day.

I also sold <=== my beloved trackbike, it was time, I haven't been to the track in 3 years. The sale allowed me to fund a much needed lift.

Shout out to for an amazing deal and excellent customer service! No more naked ;)

I had been thinking about a solution to this need for sometime. How will I power lights, electronics, fan, heated sleeping pads, etc. inside the RTT?

    Here was my solution.

    12V power box

    Amazon waterproof project box
    Ancor wire and terminals
    Bluesea buss and fuse block
    Bluesea 12V sockets
Bluesea standard and high ouput USB charging ports
5.5mm DC power port with integrated (ebay) OFF/Dimmer knob for RTT interior LED lighting
    Amazon digital DC volt meter
GPcaraudio 8 ga OFC power and ground wire
    Amazon cable glands
Amazon high current DC quick disconnect

Incurred an added expense I was not expecting :(

I really like the TRD sport rims and wanted to keep them.

***wheel locked out to one side, turned IN side @ full droop, no damn good

I've got to get new rims (not interested in spacers).

With help from our good friends Discount Tire Direct I've got a set of 17X8 Level 8 mk6's 0 offset in bronze in the works. I'll be continuing to run Faulken Wildpeak AT3W 265/70/17's for the foreseeable future. A fresh set is planned in late June.

I've got less than 5 months (18 weekends) until my MT/ID Overlanding trip.

This thread is now live moving forward with much much more to do.

These are the tentative routes, totaling 1400 miles off pavement.

Lolo Motorway and Magruder Corridor are for definite which others I haven't decided yet. We will have 12 days in the area, I don't expect to cover all that ground. But we will try :)

I've had these switches for a while. I'll install them when I pull the subwoofer enclosure and amp rack.

    *** OTRATTW custom text

Plan is to install power distribution, relay control, and the RP-150.4AB (door speaker amp) on a new back wall board. Fabricate a simple platform for the ARB refrigerator and storage.

The six lighting control switches (currently mounted in the sunglass holder door) and the DC volt meter will be going in a 7 carling switch bank (bagged items above) mounted in the DIN pocket below the head unit. I found a pic some time ago of a TW member who had 7 Carling switches mounted in this location and I like the way it looks.

The remaining 6 non-essential switches will go into the sunglass pocket location.

At some point in the future, after my trip, I'll be mounting the amplifier power switches and bass control knob in the blank spot below the shifter & beside the cup holder. As seen here on TW.

***height will exactly match height of RTT for windbreak, angle of windbreak matches angle of windshield, 1.5" square tubing to match the bed rack, powder coated black

I think everyone will find it interesting how I mount it to the roof. I put a lot of thought into how and I believe this is the best/easiest solution, for me anyway. ;)

    A thing or two...
You have a double cab, so there's no reason to reinvent the wheel. Just use the factory mounting locations under the drip rail on the roof.
