im new here because I just bought my new to me 17 OR 32k miles. Love the truck but had a howl right at 50 mph. Brought to dealer and they changed both leafs. Noise still there, but I did notice none of the hardware was changed. None. Not even the nuts for the U bolts. Is this not odd? Does Toyota not recommend replacing lock nuts or hardware with suspension repairs?

Thanks guys this site has been great so far in my taco owner ship!

Strange sure, they switched out my hardware.

More concerning would be if they erroneously torqued them to 37ft/lbs according to service manual or 73ft/lbs

Fixing the howl requires more than just the leafs per the TSB, they also need to change out the cab mounts if I recall as was stated in the TSB. I had this same issue and had it addressed last summer with the TSB. My U-bolts and hardware seemed to be the same as well and I don't think the TSB called for replacing of said hardware, just the leafs and something to do with the mount.

It worked for mine - at least 90% of it. There is a small window where I can still occasionally hear a faint howl but if I hadn't had the louder howl I wouldn't even think a thing about it it's so faint..

I had my dealer do the TSB for howling from the front lower control arms. they put plastic plugs in a few of the 5 holes in the lower control arms.. it still howls (not as bad as before) at around 52-55mph.. but other than that it's not bad at all..

This! lots of debate on this one, but I have my u-bolts torqued to about 70. tighter definitely softens rear end hits and bouncing on the rear suspension. when I raised this to my dealer at the time the response I got was "looser u-bolts should help for a smoother ride" = bullshit. tighten those babies up if they are loose which seems likely based on what I've seen on here

Looser u bolts??!! That doesn’t sound right. Leafs locate the rear axle why would you want that at 37ft/lbs! I’ve been in the dealer game for 18 years but not Toyota so I’m not 100% sure how they go about warranty work. I dropped it off today for the trans surge/ judder and a leak from either the t-case and or the trans.
