It almost seems like those "most reliable" vehicle choices were bought and paid for.

Money talks, and I wouldn't be surprised if these "Vehicle ratings" companies are just selling the win to the highest bidder.

Seems like the guy says "in initial ownership / quality" or something along those lines... No telling what that means, or what other fine print disclaimers they throw in there!

 

Initial quality means first 90 days of ownership. And Chevy wasn't lying - those particular models were at the top of their respective segments for initial quality. The misleading part of the ad is implying the rest of the models under the same brand are equally high-quality.

All companies go after initial quality because it's a low-hanging fruit. A lot of it also involves idiot-proofing the dash / user interface to avoid nuisance complaints. Design decisions like the three-position temp gauge on 1st gen Tacos are made for this reason.
