Hypertech Speedometer Calibrator with 2018 Tacoma

Does anyone else with a 2018 Tacoma have this issue with their Hypertech Speedo Calibrator installed? It's not really a big deal, but when I set my cruise control after programming my Hypertech with the correct size tires, the speed I set to displays 4-5 mph slower than my real speed. I'm thinking it has to be something to do with TSS assuming it doesn't happen on the 2016-2017s. Any ideas or fixes out there?

 

This is not an answer to your question, more an FYI... I called Hypertech after I noticed their website does not list a speedometer calibrator for the 2018. They confirmed, the 730123 is only for the 2016/2017 Taco. They said something changed on the 2018 and they are actively working on getting a 2018 unit ready for production.

 

Redundant information on my dashboard would drive me nuts.

I called Hypertech today after noticing their website had been updated to show the 2018 Tacoma is now an option. They said the same one for the 2016/17 (Part #730123) now works on the 2018. I didn't ask, but assume if you bought one before they updated it to work on the 2018, you may be able to download a software update for it - guessing.

 

Confirmed today, if you have a 2018 Taco and bought a 2016/2017 spedo calibrator (Part #730123), you can download firmware from Hypertech to make it work properly on the 2018.

 

I have the updated version of the 730123, labelled for 2016-2018 on my '18 Sport 4x4. I tried to update the firmware just in case, but it already running the latest version available.

The numeric/dial speed is correct, but the Cruise Speed Set value still remains lower. I spoke with Hypertech and they said it is not something they can change. He said set the Cruise using the speedo and ignore the cruise set value.

 

I've got the same updated model that you have for my '18, but haven't found the time to install it yet. Are your gas mileage calculations and odometer reading correctly now too?

 

So far, the odo and MPG look correct. I went from the stock Sport 265/65R17s to 285/70R17s and found if I used those values in the programmer, it resulted in 1.070% change. When compared to two GPS units, it was still a little off. I changed the stock value to 266/65R17 and it used 1.068% which was dead on.

 

I'm running 285/70R17s as well. Good to know that it may require a little tweak to dial in. Thanks for the info.

 

Same here - odometer, speedometer, shift points are now correct, and cruise control set speed is off but don't care at all about that because it doesn't affect operations. I also called Hypertech, a few weeks ago, and they said they would let engineering know but most likely nothing can be done about it because that value is coming from a different area.

 

They explained it as the Cruise Set value comes direct from the ECU, while the speed value is intercepted on it's way to the instrument cluster. The ECU still thinks you have stock tires, hard to get around that.

Cruise still works fine, it just reports the old value. No big deal to me.

 

Use the actual tire diameter in inches instead, you will get a more accurate readout. Mine is dead on accurate that way.

Once you instal the Hypertech, will the odometer instantly recalibrate the mileage difference before you added larger tires/wheels? Or does the updates miles traveled start on top of current miles?

 

The Hypertech only corrects the numbers going forward. Whatever prior data is stored in the computer will not change.

 

Got it, thank you @mlr69. I'm assuming it's a little more than just a plug-n-play type device? (inputting parameters into the device, connecting to a computer, ect.)

 

Yes, but it's very easy. The Hypertech connects to a Windows PC via the included USB cable so you can enter your new tire size info. Once the Hypertech has been updated, unplug it from the PC and install it behind your instrument cluster. The whole process, including popping out my instrument cluster, took about 30 minutes.

I see you have a 2019. You might want to call Hypertech and make sure their 730123 will work. They don't have 2019 listed on their website yet.

 

Good call. I just spoke to someone at HyperTech and they advised it wouldn't work; I'm curious as to why. IIRC, the speedometer from the 2018 and 2019 are the same.
