Bed Cross Bars

I am looking into making a set of cross bars, two separate ones so I can adjust them, and be able to throw a tarp over them for my dogs. Post pics of your guys set up. I think I want them to sit just higher than my tool box sits so I can still utillize the bed for plywood and not set it on the box.

 

Not sure if this makes sense, but this is what i want to build. Just don't know how to figure out the angles of the uprights of the length they should be to rise the bar 6 inches above the angle iron which will be and the bottom of the angle pieces.

 

This is one corner up close in real size if anyone is following.

 

That upper angle should be ~116.6 degrees (arctan(3/6)+90).

That lower angle (right wall of the tube to the right wall of the angle) should be ~153.4 degrees (arctan(6/3)+90). The actual cut angle on the lower left corner should 63.4 degrees from the left wall of the tube.

Those numbers get the the centerlines of the tubing 6" above the bed rail.

 

These are how mine attach to the Bedrails.

 

Thats how I plan to attach mine, but they will extend up by 6 inches.

 

Any way you could draw that up for me? I suck at doing that sort of thing. I can get the tubing cut and welded, but drawing and that is a different story.

The more I see round the more I think I should go round stock. I'm in oregon so I think shipping would kill the deal.

will the top bar come out at 51"?

 

To get to the 57" mounting face width that angle might actually need to change. Let me do some tinkering and I can get you the angle to keep 51" and 57" lengths.

This should hopefully get you there. My original angles assumed the centerline of the tubing was angled 3" to the right, which isn't really accurate.

 

What angle should I set my saw to to achieve that? I could always blow this up and trace that way too.

For the upper angle, you want the area of the faces to more or less match, so you have to cut the total angle in half (~63.75 degees). My fab skills are almost non-existent, but from my limited understanding you'd be better off rounding down to 63 (or even slightly smaller) to allow for expansion during welding.
