Driving a Tacoma around the world

does InReach work world wide? I know some of these maybe not inReach had black out areas that wouldn’t work. Might have been spot messengers. But make sure to double check with them.

 

Garmin uses the Iridium network which claims a 100% global coverage.

I've seen flatbed version of the camper on Tacoma and it is really nice, but the problem is that you are maxing out payload by having camper only.
Still need to put 2 people in, extra gas, gear, food, recovery tools etc; which will result in 800lbs+ overload of the platform. How do you plan to go about it? Some countries could be strict about the max GVWR I've heard.

 

I wish I still had the stamina to do more adventurous bike travels these days. Luck is best augmented by quick reflexes and the ability to run or walk out of there when appropriate.

 

Yes, fun times. The Aberdare midnight lion chase was only the second stupidest thing I did on that Norton that year.

Also keep the parts chain definitive. When something breaks, if the local machine shop can't weld or create it locally, you can always get Toyota OEM parts shipped in, with some cost and hassle.
Time is the major valuable resource for such travels. Weather, closed borders, weird demands for paperwork etc, waiting for parts and gear can eat up more days than the travel.

 

i agree it will max it out. This tundra looks great and i am sure is good set up.

 

Mine is the older Delorme from pre-Garmin buyout, but still uses the iridium network from what I remember.

 

Hell, I'm tempted to book a flight to Maui just to hear your stories.

 

For starters being able to increase the GVWR with aftermarket suspension, wheels, tires, leafs and bump stops (don't know how that works at boarders though). I would also imagine that the aluminum flat bed is lighter then everything you take off to put it on. I am also not planning on traveling the world in my set up, so it's a different ball game. Just looking to share with @Round the world something new that interested me.

 

Interesting. I’ll be taking the e rated tires, patch kit, compressor, a fuel filter, 40 gallons of gas, and a hi lift, but also also will bring a winch, imho it’s necesary, it will have lightweight, synthetic line. I’ve owned a comealong for many years; it’s not coming, I’ll leave it at that. Going with one 150 amp-hour lithium ion battery for the camper weighing about 35 lbs. I’m not sure what you mean by a bright LED option.

 

You have already travelled in Africa so you are way ahead of most people here, just finished watching Wreck Trek on Amazon prime, a group of young people buy piece of junk cars in Berlin and drive them into Africa hoping to make it to Cape Town. The tires took a real beating from the roads, lots of flats.
E rated tires definitely sound good.

 

Thanks. 2 maxtrax are a definite as well as recovery straps and a hi lift.

I haven’t thought at all about it exhaust reroute. I haven’t checked, does it hang down enough to drag in the sand/mud? I thought about doing a cat back exhaust but not sure that it really provides anything definitive other than a better sound and a smige more horsepower

I was thinking of taking a SPOT but have to check to see how much of the world it works in.

 

Nice rig! I really like the FWC Hawk because I can actually stand fully up in it. I’m 6 feet 4 1/2 inches, the hawk is a crucial 1 inch taller and 5 inches wider than the Fleet; it has plenty of room. But the half ton trucks are too wide for where we’re headed.

 

I cannot imagine taking a 2 wheel drive car down the westside of Africa but then I haven’t been there yet. Sand, mud, huge potholes, washboard roads. One tip that I have heard from my truck shop supervisor is to spray fix-a-flat inside the tires when mounting the tires. He’s the guy I would use to build the truck but no one knows I am leaving yet.

 

The exhaust doesn't hang down super low, but if you're going over rocky terrain I would want to minimize the chance of hits as much as possible. Sand and mud wouldn't really be an issue, but rocky off road conditions would probably warrant it. Hope your trip is amazing, enjoy that retirement!

 

You should check out the series if you have some time to kill in the evenings, the team does argue a fair bit but it definitely shows the environment, driving through the Congo. Mud, sand, water, they did make it. Your Tacoma with suspension and tires makes that trip look way better.

 

We used to run a pair of big Hellas on the bullbar, but a hidden bumper LED light bar is really nice for cruising at night in bad terrain. It happens.
