Dipping vs. Spraying? (painting badges)

A friend of mine tried to paint his Tundra badges. I bet he wishes he had a cool Tacoma like me
He totally f'd up his badges. Sprayed like my 3yo would, didn't inspect his work, and then put on the clearcoat. It looks horrible.

I promised I would redo it for him, and I had a thought. (Doesn't happen often; got to go with it when it comes).

How about dipping badges in a paint bath? I can easily get a test can of black paint for a buck or two and fill up a disposable container with a layer of paint and dip it. Wouldn't that give the perfect streak free drip free cover?

Any thoughts?

 

What about run from the paint being pulled by gravity? sounds like a good idea though

 

a good paint job is all in the prep work
Spraying gives you more control on how much paint goes on than dipping
but done right, either should work

 

i painted mine with bedliner , easy and looks amazing

 

I sprayed mine. I was just thinking of trying something different. Either way since he botched the original job I'll have to sand them all down now .. ugh

 

Best is thin coats so that defeats dipping. Dipping paint will probably screw up. Some coatings might work but paint is a pain.

His screwed up probably cause the paint is too thick. Thin coats and plenty of drying time between is the key.

 

+1, I would not pursue dipping, multiple thin coats will work better.

If you are going with black, should not need to sand all the old paint/clear off, just rough up the clear and start shooting black over it. If there are runs/not-smooth parts of the old paint job then that would need to be smoothed out with sanding though.

 

^^^^What he said, rough it up with a little sanding, spray thin, and that's it.

what about that liquid dip stuff that's designed to be used on tools? you can buy it at lows i think you can get it in a bunch of colors it may be to thick to still be able to read it. idk worth a try.

 

Like i said some liquids are made to dip this being one. It still does not go on nice though.

Dipping = thick = weak.

Strong paint is thin. Paint screws up because people are in a hurry. You can't be in a hurry.
