Mine is the same way. Whisky, Whiskey, or Rum of any sort she doesn't like. So I can buy pricey ones to enjoy and they're safe. But Tequila...forget it. I had a nice bottle of Extra Anejo that disappeared and it turned out that she had run out of Cuervo for mixing and had been making margaritas with my $45 bottle of Anejo :frusty:

Now when I buy a good sipping tequila I camouflage it in an old Jim Beam bottle

Yep that's what I'm thinking. Problem is I'm running out of new bottles that I would like to try. The selection is not that good in my area as most good stuff in on allocation. About the only thing left I would like the get my hands on is Stag. I can forget Sr and over $500 a bottle on the secondary market but I would like the try Stag Jr. But I'll never run across any in my state. :(

Edit. Also would like to try Weller 12 and Antique 107. But never in NC.

Will keep my eyes peeled for Stagg Jr. for you. It doesn't appear often, but I've found it a couple of times.

Can probably get one on some of the secondary markets I'm aware of for about $75 shipped, which wouldn't be too bad?

My wife is the same way... says she had a "bad experience" with Jim Beam several years ago. She mixes vodka whenever she drinks now, so I thought I'd try a little experiment to see if I can sway her to the dark side (in order to buy more whiskey!).

I poured a little bit of vodka into a glass and into another went a little bit of Longmorn 16 since it's a really sweet and pretty low ABV pour. I had her nose the vodka to get used to the alcohol and then try the Longmorn. That was the first time she has ever smelled any of my whiskies without complaining about how they make her feel sick.

Then we mixed a small amount of the whisky with some soda and she enjoyed it, so I'm on the right track toward expanding my inventory even more. Baby steps I guess.

Yeah $75 is what I wound up having to pay for the bottle I got. It was the first and only time I've ever seen it in the wild, so I just did a quickdraw with the credit card. It's good stuff, no doubt.

Plenty of great recommendations so far, so I won't muddy the waters much other than two thoughts.

    1. If you like Woodford, then have a look for Dickel Barrel Select. Should be about $40 and, to me, has a similar profile to Woodford, only better, I'd argue.

    2. For a bourbon that is easy to drink, I don't think you can go wrong with a wheated bourbon. Weller Special Reserve, Larceny, the Old Fitzgerald stuff, etc. Wheaters tend to be a little sweeter and a little smoother due to replacing the rye component with the milder wheat.

Booker's is a hot, high proof bourbon on the spicier side of the spectrum. Definitely bold and definitely not compatible with everyone's preferred flavor profile. There is enough of a variation between batches to give it another whirl. If you ever try another batch and do or don't like it, let me know and I might be able to suggest another worth trying (either as an alternative or something cut from the same cloth).

    My man! :D

Was in Vegas this weekend & ordered 2 fingers each of Blanton's & Buffalo. My girlfriend now can't stop talking about buying her own bottle of Buffalo, says she can't believe she used to assume "it all tasted like Jack". Now at least I can look forward to a bottle at her place when I stay over :woot:

Look at lower proof. The alcohols burn the taste buds. Wheated varieties are also milder (wheat vs rye).

The oak it is finished in also affects ‘burn.’ Then... how the oak is finished affects flavor too. Was the oak kiln dried? Or allowed to seep off it’s tannins?

That said, Makers 46 is good on flavor, lower proof and from corn and red winter wheat. French oak and little tannins in the barrel staves.

Get her a wheated type. Calumet. Makers, there’s one Jefferson’s that wheat... the rye is harsh.

Thanks for checking it out! Figuring in my head it would total around $150 with tax and shipping... As much as I do want it, that's a little out of my comfort zone. I really do appreciate the offer and time you took to check. If there's anything you want and I can get it out here, let me know.

Really love blantons just tends to be a bit pricey in my area. I saw it for 80+ dollars the other day and used to buy it for about half that.
For the price knob creek 100 proof is a staple for me 25.99 and it never disappoints.
Currently about to finish a bottle of eh taylors and im really enjoying it.

Any one a fan of Oban? I got a bottle of 15yr distillers choice when I was in Scotland on deployment and loved it. I have a bottle of 14yr but not quite as good.

All the Blanton's I've bought came in a box, except the last one I bought a few days ago. It came in some weird black net.

The Oban 14 is my current favorite. I've read the distillers edition is good, but maybe not worth the cost difference? What say you?
