1 Bored Clerk's Garage Built Camper

Took the day off to go drive around. Helped get this unstuck:


Then as we were backing out of this, we were blocked in by this:


No way this was getting unstuck without a big wrecker. I was able to get around it but the poor garbage truck driver couldn’t quite squeeze by and he didn’t want to get stuck again so I said goodbye and those two waited hours for the wrecker. I did get to use my tools to fix a mangled tire chain, my gloves and my shovel for digging...lots of digging! It was actually kind of fun because it wasn’t me that was stuck. Haha!

Came home and did a little camper work. Comfy, indoor camper work.


Doesn’t look like much but this is the spacing of the extrusions under my Ute bed. I need to know where the spaces and ribs are so I can put the various holes in the right spot. I’m also using this to lay out and cut a piece of plywood that I can use as a template to place the body mount blocks to use as drill guides. Should be slick! The bed extrusions are actually much more complex but this is all the info I need for my purposes right now. I can always go back in and detail the hell out of this if I have a need. Now I just need to verify that the proposed locations of my body mounts jive with what’s under the bed. The old ‘measure twice, cut once’ deal.

 

So I have Solidworks also and was wondering if you are self taught or if you took classes? I'd like to learn more without bobbling around the program.

 

YouTube videos, that’s how I learned, recently switched to Fusion360 because I lost my license for Solidworks

 

How do you like Fusion360? Is it free?

 

I believe it's free but you lose some of the features.

 

I took a beginner class in design school then took an advanced modeling class focusing on surfacing a few years later. Other than that, it was just an integral part of my day to day job. You tube certainly works. There is/was a guy, Spencer Nugent, I believe that used to have a TON of solidworks videos that were awesome for surfacing and design related cad work. CAD Junkie might have been the name of his program? I can’t remember.

 

How about compared to SW?

 

very cool model! The ute beds are a pain when you are drilling through. I had a hell of a time leaving enough room between the bottom frame so I could thread a bolt. Wasn't terrible but the drill guide will make easy work of it!

 

virtual parts, nice! the best when prototype something out!

 

It's usually fun getting someone else unstuck.

Solidworks is not free. So there's that lol
I like SW mainly because I'm trained and certified in it. but I'm a broke tacoma owner so my wallet is pretty empty. I hear good things about Fusion360, but for me I'd want all the features, like the ability to post G-code.

 

Forgive me if I missed it but do you have a rendering of what you intend the final build to look like? By that I mean installed as you envisioned it.
Just curious.
Trying to visualize the end goal as you have done intended from the build pics but my imagination falls short.

No, I haven’t done a full render on the truck. I’m just as curious as the rest of you regarding the final outcome! Haha...we’ll all be surprised or disgusted together.
