4x2 Off Road Capability

Hey guys, so I recently bought a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x2 and have been curious if I can up my off road experience quite a bit. I know you might say you should’ve gotten a 4x4 but the dealer wasn’t heavily discounting that vehicle as much. I want to get the most out of this truck, whether it being tires or suspension. (PS I have gotten the truck stuck in mud twice in a row, went to fix that problem)

 

Better tires. But it's never gonna perform anywhere near as well as a 4x4.

 

Upgrade the tires and stay out of mud.

 

First, welcome! You can find a ton of ways to have a great experience with your truck, so don't be discouraged. I have plenty of 2WD friends that SEND it (I don't) in my local & Texas group. That is the best recommendation I can give you, if find your local crew - they will be glad to have you, and give you better tips than you've gotten so far.

 

Stay on pavement

But as others have said, aggressive tires will be your friend and perhaps a winch up front and traction boards for when you get stuck.

 

Tires and suspension. What exactly do you want the truck to be able to do? Unless I’m rock crawling I’m rarely in 4wd

 

Tires and a rear locker but your going to be harder on the truck vs what a 4x4 can do. Also depends on what type of offroading your talking about. Mud is a pain but I drove out of this with little trouble. Hard to see how deep it is in the pic. Regardless, dont wheel alone and just go have fun in it.

Oh, I know. I was being sarcastic. Alot of forum members were bagging on his 2x4. His truck can do alot.

Trophy trucks are 2WD, but have either locking rear diffs or a heavy posi setup. I never got stuck in my 2WD taco running in the desert. Just takes practice. 4wd is better for slow going and not getting stuck in technical situations. I use to jump my 2WD so speed was a little different

 

Tires & a winch are key.

 

I have had two occasions where I got stuck in mud, and really bad. I was thinking about just getting a winch, but maybe something like tires, so it doesn’t get me in this situation again.

Any tires you recommend, i was wanting to go with 33s M/T

 

A good tire to get while being able to keep suspension stock is a 255/85r16.

Can get st maxx, Toyo MT, dick cepeks.. I personally have st maxx just because I don’t need a full mt yet.
