What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I don't think we should list the parts that wear out. That's normal maintenance. Mods that we want or desire to do, is what should be listed. Any regular part, wp,brakes,shocks,tie rod ends, bushings, starters,shouldn't count, only the UNneeded mods should be listed on these lists.

 

Unneeded is vague. I just bought all new inner and outer tie rods and LBJs so that I can’t keeo the ones on the truck as trail spares.

Well for instance, I'm going to try and keep my Taco pretty much stock. I'll upgrade the suspension, since I can get the OME kit cheaper than Toyota OEM parts. I guess it really comes down to
"HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU WANT TO SPEND" on your truck. Super duper lift, with extra giant wheels. I don't plan on trying to jump the Grand Canyon, so I don't need 3k dollar shocks and coil spring combo's. I'm just saying, replacing parts that wear out is normal. I guess if I was 25, maybe I'd look into some of these mods, but my hard core days are long gone. I'll be happy to do some mild off road camping, if I'm lucky. Investing several k dollars into a truck that you'll never get the money back, even if you sell it. That's why we're all different, how boring would it be if all of out Taco's were exactly alike.

Why would the thought of getting monetary return on investment even enter the equation?

We aren't talking about 64 Jaguars and 40 Packards.

These are mid sized modern trucks. The return on investment (for me anyway) is the satisfaction of wrenching on my truck, with my son(s) or with friends. And the joy of going places with my son(s), wife, friends. And pushing the truck, and myself to go someplace many other people never see.

There is not even a glimmer of a thought of getting money back out of my truck. I've owned it for 14 years and the only reason it will ever go anywhere is if it's totalled... And then, depending on the extent of the damage, I'd probably still keep it and make it a dedicated trail rig.

Not even the maintenance on my truck is done to hold any kind of value (monetary) it's done only for reliability.

I couldn’t reach mine from the bottom either. I have a manual transmission so I took the shift boots off and was able to reach in thru the cab. Small hands are still needed but at least you can somewhat see it.

 

I've got a manual as well and thought about that but was determined to do it from below.

 

Installed the used e-locker actuator that I got yesterday. Everything went smooth. Removed the old one, jacked up one tire, engaged the locker electrically before installing and manually inside the rear, installed with both in "locked" position. Works great.

 

I am also a fan of Fluid-film. I've used Rust Bullet as well to coat the whole underside of my previous truck and was really happy with the results. Just had to cover it with some black paint because its silver.

• Transfer case selector shaft base and new rubber boot
• Airbag sensor computer
• Lubed driveline
• Programmed factory keyless entry fob
• New black bumpers front and back

Thinking of a solution to carry my kayak on the Tacoma and also cover a few other bases- figured a headache rack might be useful. I was going to fab one, but then I saw this:

For $105, it looks like a good base for the build.

 

My counter to this is most average persons don't know about certain regular maintenance items until they join here. I had worked on all my own vehicles before this and didn't know about the LBJ failures, timing belt and water pump replacement (I had only owned vehicles with timing chains), leaky valve covers (I knew they could leak but on other vehicles I had it was not common), differential fluid changes, etc. But when I joined here I was like "well shoot I don't think X, X and X have been done so let me do that." And that is where a lot of money was spent on my truck that started off as a cheap daily driver.

 

Finally ordered a new seatbelt assembly for the driver side. Been looking and pricing them for a while and every place is charing hazmat shipping. Alright boys, when I roll into 1st (0-5 mph) I've got a squealing/squeaking that sounds like its coming from my rear end. Almost sounds like a dirty brake would. Any suggestions? Driving me insane.

 

I'd first just check your slave cyl and master. Sounds like one is weak or leaking if the engagement point moved down

 

Anybody think Its possible to line up the 89-95 fenders to fit a 96-2004 tacoma?

 

Nope. And 2001-2004 Tacoma fenders are different than 1996-2000 too.

If you have a 2002 Tacoma then you need a 2001 - 2004 fender

Lots of aftermarket cheap ones out there, I just bought one myself...jury is still out on whether or not it will work okay. But OEM ones are around $400 at least at my local dealership
