Man, I am pissed - within 3 weeks, I have had a BB size rock hit my windshield, and put a ding in it. Damn, they just don't make glass like they used to. Guess I'll wait until it caves in on me before I shell out the bucks for a new one:mad:

    Sorry - I meant 2 dings in 3 weeks!

I noticed all my toyota truck windshields (tacomas & tundras) have chipped or cracked at one time or another. I'm sure the angle, truck height, cab flex doesn't help find all those seemingly out of nowhere projectiles smacking the glass.

A glass tech told me if you get a chip, cover it with a piece of clear 3m tape or scotch tape to keep dirt/water out as soon as you can. It keeps the chip from cracking in temp changes (probably not a big deal in texas!) I have two pieces on mine now.

You'd think as high as it is, the rocks would come in lower. However, maybe on my other vehicles, the rocks flew over the top!

    Hi, all
But I believe the insurance company do cover the cost for the windshield, I broke mind two times in one month, and my insurance company pay for it. It is free, no money come out from your pocket,

I was driving on I-29 in ND heading back to Canada this August. It was a constuction zone, and the right lane was closed. The construction crew was cutting expansion cuts into the pavement, so there was a lot of loose gravel on top of the pavement on the right lane. Some bonehead passes me on the right lane, the one that was closed, and cuts in front of me, showering my 4 month old Tacoma with rocks. I ended up with two major stone chips, and numerous dings. That just ticked me off! I had the chips repaired, and will see how they hold out this winter. To my surprise, no stone chips on the paint.

yeah i just got a nice little nick in mine too

i was thinking of taking a fingertip of clear (and non thermic) epoxy, spotting it in there, and wiping clean.
just to keep it from spreading.
if you use a two part that heats up, i'd be afraid it would crack the glass?

When I got chip fixed in my 2004 tundra, the windshield tech handed me a sheet of little dots of clear film about an inch round & told me to stick these on when the chip happens. It keeps dirt, rain, windshield fluid out and stays on even with the wipers. I have done it time and time again since that day and the chips don't spread. If its close to an edge, its dicey anyway. In the extreme temp changes where I live, I had em on for months without fixing without a crack. I've since ran out of those dots. I use cut pieces of clear 3m film from wal mart in the office supply section. Its thin, sticky, not noticeable and works until you can get it fixed. Also, my ins co pays fully for the chip fix no deductible. Oh and scotch tape works in a pinch.

Do not feel that bad, 3 days after I got my NEW truck, a small rock hit my windshield and I got a small bullseye crack, BUT since then NOT any new single crack has been created. IF you have GEICO as your auto insurance company, they can fix it for free or replace the whole windshield for $50.00 no deductible (in fact this is your deductible).

    Hope this help.

I've got Allstate with a $400 deduct - they used to carry a seperate deduc for glass, but now it is lumped in with collision! Bummer - but why would I want to change it just to get the new one dinged again?

After about 22,000 my windshield went without any blemishes. Just recently I got a tiny chip on the bottom center of my windshield.

Around here, the windshield replacement companies will come out and do that, and insurance usually picks it up, even if it's less than your deductible. Of course, they don't guarantee that it will prevent the windshield from cracking, and in my case, it didn't.

If you do get a crack, it's very easy to lead the crack where you want it to go (ie. prevent it from cracking in your line of sight). Just rub the windshield with pressure in the direction that you want the crack to go, and lead it to an edge. I had to do this when I last had a new windshield installed... got a ding and cracked within 48 hours of having it installed, and wasn't about to pay for another.

That would depend on where you live. Not all states do that. My former state of NJ did not cover glass separately but SC covers it with no deductible. On a previous vehicle I had the windshield changed and the glass company paid ME $35. It's a freaking scam because they know they can bill the ins co whatever they want.

I know what you mean. I had a small 'spider web' chip in the windshield of my old Neon. It stayed there for two years with no further chips, and without spreading. I had to replace the windshield in order to pass the safety inspection when I moved to a new province, and two weeks later I had another chip. Same place, same size. $300 well spent.

My Dad had a chip in his city truck that he covered in tape. It also stayed there for two years without spreading. Truck was in the shop when the repair guy decided to do him a 'favour' by patching the chip. Within a week it had started to spread.

I replaced my windshield about 2 months ago. A rock hit it when I was on the freeway on ramp and it immediately split in 3 cracks going 2/3rds across my windshield, scared the  out of me. My insurance 'repairs chips/cracks smaller than a dollar bill' for free, but replacement is covered under comprehensive and subject to the deductable. My deductable is the same cost as a full replacement, so I skipped the insurance claim. I had a chipped repaired on my last vehicle and it never spread any further, but was annoying to look at.

As shown in these two quotes- Different agencies and states have different rules for different levels of coverage.

It's worth talking to your insurance agency- Tn FL front windshield replacement is required by law-free of charge- (no deductable). Explore that before you shell out 250 to 800 for new glass.

    Good luck!!

If insurance companies in Colorado were required to pay for new windshields free of charge, premiums here would be through the roof!

Just a heads up I have seen a rock chip or (Rock Star) spread rapidly in cold weather when the windshield is cold and you turn on the defroster to high heat . We have a guy that comes out and repairs them for us it's like $30.00 and we have not seen one spread after his repair.

Another heads up, if you pay the guy cash, he might give you a better deal. I had a guy that would cost $30 if all the paperwork was filled out or $20 cash.

Another head's up, if you call your insurance company and schedule it through them, they'll pay for it regardless if it's less than your deductible.
