I agree all suppressed AR's are loud by comparison, but I would disagree that pistons don't have a place.

One of my favorite suppressor hosts in a piston built 10.5". It's an incredibly soft/smooth shooting gun with notably less gas to the face and a much cleaner action.

AAC designed it to be optimized with a 9" barrel.
Are you set on a AR platform or if you want maximum quiet?...get a crack open/breech load 300blk.
Goes without saying you are hearing all action when you shoot 300blk suppressed. Zero action with the breech load. My buddy has one and it makes a big difference, you hear less than a bb gun. He has shot 30 hogs in a night while sitting in his blind with it.

All pistons "leak gas" if they didnt, the piston would go through your cranium.

IMO, if you're going AR, dedicate it to suppressed use and tune it to suppressed ammo. Play with either an AGB, buffer and carrier mass, or both until it just cycles while a bit dirty. You'll get the best noise results either way by ensuring gas goes through the suppressor, and not out the front of a gas block. As far as DI vs Piston goes, I'm a DI guy, but mainly because even DI guns aren't actually DI, the piston is just in the BCG instead of at the gas block. It's a reliable system that's light and quite resistant to external crud, no sense in reinventing the wheel there.

I was thinking on this, and I made a realization. If you want at-ear numbers piston makes sense because the piston pop happens further from the ear. If you don't care as long as it's hearing safe, both are probably equally loud to listeners.

I have an 8.5" Noveske barrel, Mega upper/lower, BCM lightweight hand guard, CTR stock and T-1 sight. Shoot it suppressed all the time. Very accurate and sooo quiet. Never weighed it but would say it 6-7 pounds unloaded and very maneuverable.

That's kinda my thinking. If you want quieter at ear, piston for sure. If you just want hearing safe, piston vs DI might not make any real difference. It's all about what you want, quieter vs cheaper.

Lots of good info here if you have time. The OP of this thread is very experienced with grendels. He also wrote 2 reloading books for them.

I'd avoid Bear Creek Arsenal, personally. Mine has been reliable but inaccurate with all of the ammo I've used, and with a cartridge like Grendel I value accuracy highly. In the guise of a steel case shooting plinker it's been pretty fun but groups like 9moa with wolf lol.

Yeah I'm intrigued by the stuff on Delta Team's site because of the price point and the ones I was looking at were Aero uppers w/ Ballistic Advantage barrels which I've been very happy with. At the same time I've been doing some reflecting and I think I'm just going to make a very large ammo purchase. I could use some more of just about everything I have anyway and shooting long range I'm not too worried about quick follow up shots so bolt guns are very very enjoyable. I already take my 556 AR w/ a BA barrel out to 500 and thats the longest range I have access too sortof often.

Plan now is more fed gmm 308, 223 match, a bunch of 55gr 556 and a couple thousand rounds of 9mm. A new upper and caliber would be cool but not really something I need, more ammo to shoot what I've already got would be a better purchase.

Picked up a bike tube while I was in town to make a ranger band for my sling, we’ll see how it grows on me, seems like it will be a pain to re-tuck after deployment if used for something other than bedside duties.

No personal experience, but I know Appleseed bans them categorically because of some safety issues that weren't fixed. I'd get a 22lr upper for an AR15 or a marlin/1022/cz 455 over one myself just on feel.
