Actually yes, when the 2020 is released. I probably would never buy another stick but I am curious how they drive. It’ll be after next September before I’m really ready to buy.

Get a 2017, plenty of them are out there - sold by those who want all the new fancy nanny stuff. I just got my wife a 2019 Rav4 and its all cool what it has, but I’m very happy not having it on my 2017 “hideous” :poking: double cab! Oh, and welcome!

I find this interesting, since it’s the same motor and transmission (with minor updates).

I thought the same thing but drove them pretty much back to back when I was shopping around and it seemed to be the case. The 2nd gen's had a starting curb weight of 3550 lbs and the 3rd gen's start almost 1,000 lbs more so that is almost certainly it. Not sure if they changed gearing/tuning with the update too.

I nabbed the last year for the 5MT 4-cyl (2017), my only gripe is the fear of loss and not being able to replace it (easily). Runs like a beast until you need to get up a hill quickly, or tow anything of significance up a hill.

if I wanted a truck with more power I would've bought one, and it wouldn't be a midsize v6.

I've towed max weight (3500lbs) and bed loaded with my 4cyl and it never "struggled". Buy what you want but the 16/17 4cyl 4x4 MT are basically a carryover 2nd Gen drivetrain in a new shell.

    Edit:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...hifting-transmission-ugh-2018-trd-pro.594903/
With threads like these every day, shitting on the 4cyl is a comical position.

What is the point of the 4 cylinder anyway? Why wouldnt anyone buy one that isn't running a pest control business and wants to torment their employees? Are you sadomasochist?

Looks like you're right - I forgot regular cab was an option for 2nd gen. I pulled up product catalog for 2013 and 2016. 4x4 access cab was 4000 in '13 and then 4195 in '16. I'm guessing weight goes down a bit the farther you go back in model years. Could be all in my head but I remember 4 cylinder pre-2016 feeling "acceptable" to me and I felt disappointed with the same engine in the 3rd gens which sucked bc I was totally on board with an SR at the time.

My theory is the 3rd gen 2.7L has some sort of conservative "break-in" tune, mine felt borderline dangerously slow for the first 1,000 miles or so, really woke up after that!

lol I don't mean it struggles like it's not functional. Just seems like you have to slam your foot to the ground for 10 seconds to make it up to 60mph.

To be fair... 2nd gen V6 also seemed a lot more enjoyable than the 3rd gen V6 but I know we aren't talking same engine in that case.

Lol. It isn’t mine. I plucked it from the silver truck thread because it’s a good example of what I want to do on my next purchase. It’s hideous. :D
