I'm with ya. Gas is gas is gas, just as oil is oil is oil. The cheaper the better. Top tier yes, but buying Shell when I can get mobil/amaco for 20% less, why the hell would I buy Shell?!?

To the people claiming its worth it to pay 20% more for Shell gas cause of the detergents, dont really understand detergents. We are talking parts per million. The amount of detergent added to a tanker is laughably small. Study after study shows there is no difference between the top tier gas. They have broken down engines that ran on expensive gas and those run on cheap non top tier , and there wasnt one iota of difference.

Unless your engine is knocking or you have high compression turbo engine, you are just wasting your money buying premium and even midgrade. To those saying you truck rides smoother, its your mind making you feel good about wasting money.

    Too few to list.
Unfortunately where I live a percentage of Ethanol is a requirement (I think up to 10%). I have only ever seen one gas station that sells zero ethanol and race gas.

I buy whatever is the cheapest 87 I can find. I’ve filled up in the shittiest gas stations in the middle of Nevada and the truck runs the same no matter what. I also tried a tank of clear gas once- no difference.

Anyone that thinks your truck runs differently with different octane or brand- it’s in your head.

Same here. That Cenex is out in a large suburb of Seattle. My friend has two E-0 stations near him in the middle of Seattle and is stoked since he has a Bronco that doesn't get run very often. Everything that is near me is either a marina or airfield. Haha!

Starting in July Ohio is raising gas tax another 18 cents a gallon, might wanna have a full tank if planning to travel thru.

I've worked for two super-major oil companied during my career and you are wrong.

"It's done to "help" the environment and create jobs for companies creating the chemicals. Think Ethanol subsidies." is the most ridiculous thing I've read on this forum to date.

Doubtful it helps mileage, but it definitely will keep your valves cleaner on a port injected engine.

They love it. Cheap, subsidized octane booster.

Ha! I suppose you are right considering that us folks at the only voices I hear complaining.

I forgot about the subsidized part. Otherwise, my thought was that their supply chain would like that 10% back?

Yeah. ALOT of people equate octane with energy content. All octane does is raise the ignition temperature. Ethanol has very high octane, so throwing some of that (government subsidized) into cheaper gas raises the overall octane. Hell, it's probably a good solvent too, which could help make it top tier. Maybe ethanol is considered an additive. Three birds one subsidized stone...

I think there is some merit to higher octane and higher mpg. As long as it's gasoline to gasoline octane. The problem is the ethanol octane energy content trifecta. Apples to oranges.
This is coming from multiple experiments I have conducted with my old expedition and pure highway driving. (were talking 800 mile drives). All things being equal, higher octane allows different engine timing (or even compression ratios), which could make the engine perform more efficiently, netting higher mpg.

So blanket ruling it out ignores too many factors...

Depending on the engine tuning it may be possible to have more HP from higher octane fuel. Some vehicles do have octane sensors in them to retard or advance timing based on the octane rating. The only possible way to get better fuel mileage from the same octane is to have a higher btu rating. BTUs are what makes it happen folks. That's why diesel is more efficient than gasoline and why gasoline is more efficient than ethenal. Now it may be possible that the additives may provide more energy thus enhancing the BTUs. The only way to provide accurate proof would be to have all the different fuels tested at a lab for accurate comparison. Now let's talk about oils....:boink:

I feel that it varies depending on the make and model. I do know our turbos were happiest on premium, but that is different.

I tried a couple tanks of 91 in this Taco. Once by accident. I lost MPGs. Although now with OVT, I will give 91 another shot after a couple more tanks of 87 to see if the power bump is worth the cost of premium.

gas is pretty expensive around Irvine Ca......i have a shell station around the corner (.9mi).....been buying gas there for 40 years......it currently is $3.75 for regular.......1.3 miles from there is a Costco......Costco gas (top tier) regular sells for @2.99 and has been as low as $2.39......I get as good of mileage with Costco as I do with Shell or Chevron.....when I travel and there is a Costco, i go there.....if not, i look for Shell or Chevron.......if you like the Techron additive from Chevron, buy it and put in gas at Costco if you want, but costco has good gas in my opinion and my truck run great and get excellent mileage
