Enough Already! Your Truck's T, HP and RPM Explained

Let's talk more about these mods... I like what I'm hearing.

 

Basically a motor is just a multi cylinder air pump the more efficient it is the more hp it'll make

Ported Polished CNC cylinder heads allow for more airflow on the intake side along with increased flow on the exh side .These mods are good for up to 70hp

A more aggressive cam profile that will work in conjunction with the cylinder heads

Larger throttle body allows more air into the motor


Torque converter designed to get the motor faster into its hp / tq curve this will improve off idle throttle response

Performance transmission valve body for firmer quicker shifts

 

How much of this is custom, how much can be bought and installed?

Does any or all of it void warranty?

 

I'm no expert, but you're probably going to have to make changes to the ECM calibration to truly take advantage of these mods.

 

I’m so happy I have a manual six speed in my 2016 tacoma TRD sport. No automatic transmission hunting shifts!
I can hold any gear up or downhill or shift as needed myself and red line at will. I can downshift to avoid lugging engine.
I test drove an automatic and hated the transmission hunting gears or continuing to upshift while I was approaching slow or stopped traffic ahead.
A manual shift provides more control and is a better driving experience IMO
As far as speed and power I’m aware I bought a truck not a sports car. I have no problem with the stock available horsepower or speed.
And my clean driver license is a bonus.

So I was really happy with the truck and the way the power hits. Now I am really upset this thing doesn't roast its tires like the Lambo on This video game I saw once.

 

I mean.. the true solution, from a performance/appeasing tacoma world perspective would be to squeeze a 4.0-5.0L V8 into the taco. With the requisite suspension/frame/transmission/brake upgrades of course. Sort of a throwback to the dodge dakota days. Sure leave the v6 option, but give us the Taco-HD. 10000lbs towing, "small" truck, power and torque for days.

But of course.. if they built that they'd sell all of 0 Tundies..

 

I’d be all over it for sure. It’s a shame that would never come to fruition.

 

I noticed today not sure why I just figured it out...if you want something that’s got balls you gotta make the jump to dodge/Jeep. I’d never do it my motto has always been.. I’ll take no car over a mopar.

 

Cause all Dodge has is that big fat hemi. Everything else on ‘em falls apart in a couple years. You have a good wank-fest with your buddies about how much power it makes. These are the same people that put 850hp in a Challenger. In case you gotta drag race that Sonata in the other lane...

Those big dodge trucks look purdy when new but up here in the northeast they become rust buckets in no time
I’d never expect the reliability either compared to a Tacoma
My black 2016 TRD sport with manual tranny looks better than any truck out there IMHO

The 3.5 is built like a race motor. Forged bottom end, roller everything, oilsquirters on the pistons, four bolt main with cross bolting, double overhead cam, four valves per cylinder. That engine is the bomb.

 

I agree! However Cadillac CTS has a 3.6 liter with twin turbos that gets about 420 hp and about the same torque.
That’s something for Toyota to think about anyway.
I doubt though that Cadillac motor would be good truck duty. Just fast. Great if gas money isn’t a problem.

I love the 3.5 in my mt dcsb taco. Good on gas and powerful when needed. Very quiet and smooth with normal driving. Really wakes up at 4-5k rpm. Tripped rear tires going from 1-2 and 2-3 when i was racing m5. Ha, i lost of course but kept up with it. Hopefully this engine lasts a long time cuz im planning to keep her 10+ years.

 

My 4runner does not do this!

I'm new to the Tacoma, got the Pro. I came from S4's, multiple StageII Golf R's, Jeep SRT... and I can tell you with 100% confidence that this truck is slow as balls. It just is, I'm not complaining I'm just stating the facts. Now for it's purpose that's just fine and dandy however in this generation if you're not 300HP at a bare minimum it's not enough. Part II of this is simple, when you pay 40-50k for a truck you should be expected you're getting some sort of extra performance over a base model... Nope! Not Toyota! I'm just going to have it tuned at some point and leave it there.

 

First, if you're happy with the way your truck runs from the factory... that's great and I believe you. Please read that again, in case you feel I'm calling anyone out with this post.
For those that have 16/17 and possibly some early '18 V6 models with pre-TSB ECM calibrations, read this and make up your own mind. From Mat Wilson (OVtune):

"First we began with running 04B03 stock, vs 04B04 Stock.
We set the truck up on the dyno, and ran 04B03.
Immediately after we updated the ECU to Toyotas TSB ECU version 04B04 through techstream.
- The truck immediately picked up a noticeable amount of low end torque and a positive gain or +6 horsepower over 04B03 stock. (note, no changes except updating to 04B04)"



So what's my point? Toyota HAS been improving their tune for our trucks. I would guess they didn't just do it randomly. Top two traces represent the torque curve (blue = factory 04B03, red = TSB 04B04, for automatic trucks). Look at the difference in the ~2200 to 3750 range. Anyway, the more you know..

 

my 2.7l is slow and underpowered but it still gets me to the liquor store reliably, and I don't need to drag race to the Home Depot or the supermarket.

 

In my 3.5 6mt, when you get the revs up it goes. Not a racecar but not slow.
