It stretches when you don’t use it often enough, so it starts seizing up, and you have to pull harder to get it to move.

(Sounds like a viagra advert o_O)

Ideally you would come to a complete stop, shift to neutral and engage the parking brake, remove your foot off the floor brake (to check it's not going to roll and let the weight of the truck rest on the parking brake), then shift to park. This ensures that the weight of the truck is being held in place with the parking brake and not the transmission pawl.

Edit: Oops, I may have misread what you were saying. You're saying you don't want it to rest on a gear. Either way, the procedure above is good practice for an automatic trans.

Except it's not resting on a gear. It's resting on the transmission pawl. The pawl's primary function is to prevent engine power from reaching drive wheels, not to prevent the vehicle from rolling on an incline. That's actually very bad for the pawl and can cause premature failure.

I subconsciously put it on every time I park because all of my cars before the Tacoma had manual transmissions.

Good practice too to press and hold the button when you engage or disengage the brake, then let the button go when it’s up where you want it or in the fully down, disengaged position. The ratchet mechanism is made to hold the handle in a given position and doing that saves some wear on it. No use in grabbing the handle and cranking it into position and beating up the mechanism.

Well, its not exclusive to trucks. Its been a basic procedure for vehicles for decades.

If you paid someone for lessons on vehicle operation and driving, ask for a refund. :D

Ahh, thank you. I was going to ask from previous posts about the gears on an AT always being engaged. I used to put C4's and C6's together for Ford.

While I am all for using the e-brake in any parking situation due to the whole "use it or lose it" ideal (which is true), I use my e-brake religiously no matter what every time I park and about two winters ago, had an issue disengaging the e brake and had to fight the foot brake during a 38-45* California non snowy morning once. It happened about 2 or 3 times following that during the same winter season and has not happened since.

I almost lost it, but I use it, a lot. Go figure. :notsure:
