depends on what you want to do. i went big on my first vhf radio. HF can be spendy from what i have seen (over 1k). but a small handheld radio like the baofeng listed below in products discussed is $30 and the test fee is like $15.

 

Didn't the baofeng's get hit with some lawsuit?

 

i think i read something on that. cuz you could do stuff the FCC didnt like. i dont remember what it was exactly. but you could get another brand handheld for cheap. like mid 100s id say for a decent one.

I’d say if you’re going to get into it go ahead and invest in a decent dual band DMR radio to begin with. You can get the Alinco DJ-MD5 for $148 right now and with a technician license talk all over the world with the DMR side on it. It also works for local DMR or the regular analog repeaters. With a little hotspot that connects to WiFi you can basically have a repeater anywhere there’s WiFi for DMR. A plus with DMR is it doesn’t matter where we all are we can talk to each other on it. I talk to Max a good bit when he connects to our local DMR repeater or I can use the hotspot and talk to him anywhere. The hotspots run about $105. You don’t have to have one to start with though, you can add it later.
