I’ll keep an eye out for your follow up. I just had the front suspension installed with the rear scheduled for next month. I’m definitely going to re-gear and I’m still on the fence, re: 4.88 vs 5.29.

Awesome, what kind of suspension did you go with? My rear suspension components should ship next week so I'll have all nine going on hopefully before next month when I go for the regear.I admit i've seen a couple people go with 4.88 then later do 5.29 and i'm not even trying to deal with that.

Im also throwing this out here to get some opinions, I wasnt sure that i was going to go with the REM polishing but I'm 300 miles away from ECGS, therefore i will not have the opportunity to do an accurate break in for 500 miles bc I'm going up one day, getting the install them driving back the next. My plan is to try to drive around local there and get a couple heat cycles on them the night they are put in and the next morning before I make the trip back. But with the REM he said I will not have to worry about that typical break in period, of course I will drive easy on my trip back and will not be hauling anything or running in 4x4

Who went from 4.88s to 5.29s? Curious who actually spent the money to do the swap then spend money to swap again if it was worth it. I asked ECGS about it and they said it wasn’t worth the money or effort to gain 150 rpm. I know Big Mike did it but he’s on 40s so I think he needs all he can get with his crawler but as far as people on 33s or 35s I’d like to get some input

A couple people I know,a come of them are probably getting notifications on this thread, so if they want to chime in they will, I'm not going to put their info out like that. Not my place.I do think a lot of guys are realizing that 5.29 is the sweet spot regardless of tire size, especially with additional weight and in an overlanding vehicle. I even know 2 guys one with 5.29 and other with 4.88 completely stock otherwise, including wheels n tires and they are very happy.

dont Be afraid to tag anyone. Lots of people in here are waiting for anyone that has run both sets to say if upgrading from 4.88s to 5.29s was worth it or not.

I went with the Total Chaos +2 LT Race Kit, paired with King 2.5+Reservoirs. Instead of adding 400-600lbs in armor, I’m trying to go with tube bumpers but, AllPro is the only company making front bumpers in mass production style versus custom.

So swapped 2.5” icon with SSO bumper & winch. I run 33s in my DCLB AT so I was kind of heavy from the git go. Swapped to 4.30s which doesn’t seem like enough fighting the mountains in Cali. Anyone got 5.29s with a similar setup? Noticed the mpg seemed to stay the same on the stock setup which gives me hope lol

Also wondering if anyone does 80 mpg with 5.29s and 33s.... mpgs, scary, not scary ect?

Strictly talking the OR MT. What's the dividing line for 5.21 vs 4.88 as a general consensus? Just read the whole thing and seems up in the air still due to the tranny gears

I get the same impression......form what I've read I think it's like if you're gonna go 4.88 you might as well go 5.29. Basically gives yourself a set of gears on the stick that would mimic say 0-5 instead of 1-6.....I think 4.88 is in the middle, like having 0.5-5.5 if that makes sense.

I certainly won't be going past 35s. And I've been looking at the 34 size. I do a lot of highway, but about 2k offroad every year from trails to 60miles+ to the nearest town camping. If I could keep it reasonable in the OD gears that'd be great. But I'd like to keep at least what I have now for 4lo compression when coming down mtns

I dont know if you will see a significant difference between the 4.30 gears and 4.88, the ATs are geared so much higher. That being said the MT OD gears are much lower as well so you don't benefit as much for highway driving as the ATs

6th gear on an MT with stock 4.30s has the same final drive ratio as the AT with 5.29 gears.

My biggest concern is i spend a ton of time in 4lo between 2nd and 3rd in the mtns. I'd like to retain the ability to hit a vertical rock and not have to worry about bottoming it out in the rpm range. I know its splitting hairs in 4lo but it's something I spend almost every other weekend doing these days. Granted, it all should be slightly easier with a larger diameter tire.

If you are spending a lot of time in 4lo, I would go with the 5.29s personally .

@Trident904 is running an MT with 4.88s and 35s so he might be able to chime in on what he thinks of them.

4.88's and 35s are great on the manual transmission, on the AT, I can't comment.

I'm leaning towards the 4.88 just because of all the traveling I do just to get to the woods. NWM is 6hrs for us. The MT regearing knowledge seems to be a bit scattered and sparse on here. If that means going with 34s for a better balance then that's fine.

Since you are MT, you'll like the 4.88's. Have you done the clutch accumulator delete yet?
