In that case, the guy that did the last smog check on my truck (with this mod installed) didn't seem to care about the change in the intake routing, or else he didn't know it's a mod but that seems unlikely given how popular tacomas are in my area (LAX/South Bay) it's almost impossible that I brought in the first one ever at that shop. I'm assuming that since it's not changing the filter/airbox from stock, it might fall in the same category as a cat-back system and be considered minor enough functionally to be exempt from needing a CARB cert. I can't remember if they even popped the hood during the "inspection", but I also wasn't really watching it get done.

btw, there's pics of my parts list and what my install looks like (I did remove the "sock" off of the intake stack after it got sucked into the airbox, but otherwise the pics are still what I'm running). Check out post # 206 (pg 11) on this thread.

I work for the state, I also do work at the BAR investigations shop. they do sneaky shit. I asked them there answer is if its not on the approved list and labeled with the approved labeling, it should fail inspection. Now lots of guys doing smog know theirs nothing different about this mod from stock and will just look passed it. But it a good idea though to just have it in the truck to swap out if it fails visual or swap before you go get smog.
and :brianr: CA and there dam laws.

Reviving this thread for a sec... Decided to do this since I trimmed for 35s and didn’t really want a snorkel.. here’s my outcome. $12 solution reusing the stock intake tube turned over and cut off enough for a rubber coupler at the last flat straight surface of the tube. 5” of 3” pvc (painted), rubber clamped coupler and door trim lining for the cut hole. Turned out awesome, thanks for the write up and ideer032F05FD-B450-4069-8F42-8606D981274C.jpg

I like that door trim idea. I think I'm gonna add that to mine for a little more snugness through the cowl hole

Yeah it was a very snug fit. I had to pull the trim out a little and push the tube thru to get the trim to roll onto the edge and sit correctly. Worked out perfect though. Gonna make an a/c intake divider like the OP did in the next few days when the weather is better.

For those of you wanting to seal the hole in the firewall, back in my aquarium days we'd use something called a Uniseal to run pipes into buckets/barrels - https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/uniseal-bulkheads.html I don't know how well it'd work for this application, but I figure I'd throw it out there.

The fire ratings may not be high enough but I'm sure it would work for sealing.

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
I doubt it. There is a LOT of movement there. Besides, leaving it free to move also helps with air filter changes.

Oh, and hi  OP here. Just cruising through, and truly surprised this thing is at 16 pages already! I didn't think there would be more than 3 pages of "shit won't work, man."
Still got mine in, still working perfectly, even after the deluge SoCal has been getting recently (wish I could say the same for my garage roof :rain:).

This mod only works for EAF, not the best for splashing mud puddles on REAL hardcore fireroads.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess you haven't tried this mod so you have real-world experience to back up your claim. That's a very short, very stout limb, btw.

No, I did it, and it was/is a great mod to pair with 35s. But I don't think my experiences represent the bulk of the folks here. I've sucked almost as much water through my cowl snorkle mod as beers on the trail. @Jibbs knows this and has been warned as we often wheel together as lovers. I'm going with a 4" stainless steel snorkel that I will be fabricating in my Yard whilst drunk. May make two of them

Show up to the yard cause I don't even care if I'm not getting the second one, I'll chug some beers and sleep in everts yard again.

In all seriousness, I'm probably buying a proper snorkel in the next few months. I don't trust this one to still not get full of stuff the way I romp around on trails.

Stretch a sock over the open end in the cowl. If you use one of the water-repelling covers that are made to cover motorcycle/CAI cone filters, don't trust the built-in elastic though.

The one thing I have noticed with this is that it'll suck up whatever leaves/needles or other debris collects around the cowl and the airbox will need to be cleaned out occasionally; the cone filter "sock" I used initially actually got sucked into the pipe and ended up in my airbox just driving around town. One of these days I'll get around to attaching a loop of paracord around the open end of the sock to stop that from happening again.
