Anyone have info on access to Chaco Canyon, conditions of the roads and which road is easier to get into the canyon? I'm coming from Las Vegas, NV. I'm thinking of visiting the park in April.

If you've been here I'd appreciate any other insight, currently the plan is to camp there for three days and visit sites via bicycle from camp. Planning on lots of photography...not enough time? to much time? Also want to day hike the mesa up behind the canyon.

    Thanks in advance.

Three days is tons. We have taken a Hyundai Accent back there - although I'm sure the Taco will be much more comfortable.

You can most def bike from camp.

    Enjoy!

No problem. The road from the north is a bit better, but either is fine. Three days would be great and it's a nice campground.

I drove 371 north out of Thoreau on the I40 last May and the road was good but did get muddy with a passing rain. A guy driving an F150 with trailer was coming out that way and didn't have problems. The north access road (county road 7950) is a bit better, but I don't think you will have problems either way (depending on the weather).
You should see plenty in three days. Have fun!

EDIT: I drove the 371 to the 9 eastbound and turned north on 57.
I really enjoyed the guided tour of Casa Rinconada!

For camping you need to make a reservation online.
    https://www.nps.gov/chcu/planyourvisit/camping.htm

Try to schedule for a moonless night; the night sky there is spectacular. "Night sky programs will be offered on Fridays and Saturdays between April and October and Tuesday nights when staffing allows."
