Napa oil filter vs Toyota oil filter

Same site will debate the best oil filter and pay up for one and then have a debate on the need to use a new crush washer which costs pennies on the oil pan after draining the oil. Lol. It's awesome.

 

I use OEM. My dodge truck doesn't use an oil filter, it was like that from the factory and it still runs fine after 73 years so I am not sure if you even need one - or detergent oil. Most likely just another way for them to make a quick buck.

 

I exclusively use Toyota Filters. I figure if they're good enough for Toyota to use it on their vehicle's. They're good enough for me. But use whatever makes you feel better. You're the one paying the bills, and you have to feel comfortable about it.

 

Nothing wrong with OEM if you want normalcy. There are better filters, just like there are better shocks, brakes, etc...

I use Purolator Boss PBL30001. Good for 15K but I replace at 10K using synthetic oil. And because it's an oversize filter, increase oil capacity by half a quart.

 

My last order through ebay was 10 for $40 for OEM.

 

Why mess with non-OEM? Toyota oil filters are cheap and excellent quality.

Now other things, yes OEM sucks (like leafs or wheel bearings).

 

In my area the NAPA Gold is twice the cost of a dealer

90915-YZZD3 4.0L oil filter. Why would I want to pay twice the cost of an OEM filter? Even the NAPA Silver line is more expensive than dealer OEM.

I just used my last Toyota. I have 3 Wix to use and then I’m going to try an FL400S Motorcraft.

 

The Boss is a decent filter. Synthetic media is the way to go for syn oils. They trap way more particles than paper. If your fiercely loyal to the Toyota filter, that's fine, but as you stated, there's better aftermarkets out there. Just as many guys love one brand as hate it. Just like spark plugs or batteries.

 

Buying a filter with a better efficiency rating, higher burst rating, and that holds more oil, is not messing around. OEM oil filters are the smallest and cheapest grade they can be to meet the recommended oil change interval. Of the millions of cars Toyota sells, saving a penny per filter translates into more profits. That being said, Denso does make good filters for Toyota, but they are quite small.

I have been purchasing the Napa Gold filters when they go on sale each year for half price for my other cars. Usually the sale begins in early March at my local store. For my Tacoma though, I purchase the OEM Toyota filters since they are very reasonably priced at about $5 each. Since I use synthetic and change it every 5k, I really don't think it would matter much since both Napa and Toyota are both quality filters.

 

What about the obscenely expensive Amsoil synthetic filters? I’ve seen them at $30 which seems like a waste, unless you can get 50k miles out of it.

 

To go that route, routine oil testing would be needed to see when the oil should be changed.

Denso from Thailand makes em. There generally good quality. If ur buying filters designed for synthetic oil they are always going to be made a little better. However if ur changing ur oil when ur supposed to it shouldn't matter. Ive seen vids of the cheapest fram filters coming from factory with rust in them n not just surface rust flaking falling apart rust. Just dont buy the cheapest like some recommend as u get what u pay for. But u cant go wrong with what toyota puts in at the factory either.

 

Ive used a toyota filter every time (63 oil changes, performing 64th today)
they are only $4-5, comes pre-lubed
