Crazy story and these types of things probably happen all too often. I too feel like “well it’s a Toyota DEALER doing my service, so all will be well” but that’s just not the case.

FWIW I’ve done a ton of mild to moderate maintenance jobs on my 2nd gen and specifically the oil change was the easiest. Took about 21 minutes thanks to the location and ease of draining and filling and reaching the oil filter right at the front. Not sure how easy 3rd gens are but I would assume also very easy.

So sorry about your headache, man

That’s a mistake I ALMOST made the other day. Went to drain my blinker fluid and ended up with pink coolant all over my garage. I won’t make THAT mistake again.

Nah bro. I have retrofits so I put full synthetic xenon fluid in there... and change it every 5k miles.

If the level is high enough it'll whip up the oil like whipped cream. Bearings won't like whipped cream.

The smoke was probably oil blowing past the rings.

I would have concerns of engine damage. They should buy your extended warranty if the truck runs fine after oil level correction.

If you're truck makes it to 100,000 miles with no mechanical engine issues, the engine is fine.

I would be concerned for a number of reasons, but the short list of items to worry about is those expensive to buy and install catalytic converters will have a much shorter life expectancy, every lambda probe will be compromised.

It is reasonable to assume damage from hydro-locking is possible/probable.

The smoke blowing from he exhaust is a clear indication oil made it's way into the combustion chambers. The combustion chamber's job is to compress air not liquid. At a minimum you should be concerned about bent valves. Simple check is to pull the sparkplugs to see if they are wet with oil. If the sealer has put in new plugs, it is to cover his tracks. If the plugs are wet with oil, the heads need to be pulled and inspected for bent valves.

Your engine bearings are damaged from foaming oil (a little oil and a lot of air) the plain bearings rely on a thin film of oil under pressure to function. The bearings are thin slivers of soft alloy that will smear easily against the forged steel crank journals without adequate lube. How much damage is unknown without dropping the oil pan and pulling the bearing caps from the rods and mains.

That engine is fucked, but it will probably continue to run long enough that when it has a failure 2,000 or 12,000 or 22,000 miles down the road your friendly dealer will have distanced himself from blame.

If the dealer is so convinced the vehicle is in perfect condition then he shouldn't have a problem taking it in on trade for a new Tacoma, giving you top trade value and swapping your lift and other upgrades at no charge.

I will wager the dealer will not want to take your trade or will only give you an extremely low trade-in value...that should tell you everything you need to know about his true belief of the damage done.

    Sorry to hear this OP.

It’s one more reason to never go to the dealer for anything (except recalls).

Is there a drain plug on the transmission? It wouldnt drive if it lost all its oil. They probably had it on one of the drive over pits and they didnt drain it got distracted updating facebook and put more fluid in, thinking the guy below drained the oil. regardless theres some incompetence going on there....

Why would trade value matter to the dealer? They are just going to sell it to the next sucker and let the chips fall where they may. You think it matters to them which customer they screw?

There is a drain plug on the transmission. Usually when a transmission is drained it only drains 3-5 quarts that’s in the pan. There’s still fluid in the torque converter, trans cooler, trans cooler lines and trans body. I’ve read that total capacity for most passenger vehicle automatic transmissions is 10-16 quarts

But he's saying that if they did drain the transmission instead, only a few quarts came out and not the full +/- 12 quarts...so it wouldn't be near zero or near empty for that matter.

The only real worrisome thing here IMO is that the engine was filled with 2x it's normal amount of oil, that's no good at all.

I'll also never understand how anyone can mix up an engine drain plug with the transmission one, they aren't even close to one another...but it seems to happen pretty often

Yes, if there is none there will be issues. All of it isn’t going to drain out if you pull the drain plug. The transmission fluid have to cycle to run the fluid into the transmission pan so when the drain plug is pulled, only a few quarts comes out leaving several quarts still in the transmission.

    The AC6OE/F drains 3.5 quarts. That's 33% of capacity.

Not to me, to the dealer. The original post I quoted stated the dealer will try to low ball him on trade in value. My point is, I don’t think the dealer will do that, as they want the OP to. I’ve on happy, and the next sucker that buys his truck used, will have no idea what happened and thus pay the dealerships cost of trade and then some.

So I hope this clears up my thinking for you as your comment reads to me like you didn’t get my point. Have a nice day.
