The usual...Sport vs OR

That's a question for the marketing people, pretty much all manufacturers call it something different. VW used to call theirs Syncro, Audi calls it Quattro, Kia calls it Dynamax, etc.

These guys are right and so are you. You want an MT, get one. The AT will leave you wanting. The OR has a rear locker, but both can have 4x4. You can do quite a lot of trails just with 4x4 and decent tires if you do want to go off roading. You won't be limited with the Sport until you start getting to the real nasty trails anyway.

Get the truck you know you want, MT Sport.

 

Sport 6MT is available in Access Cab or Double Cab in the US. OR is only a Double Cab in if in the US.

 

Here in the US, if you want a MT LB it only comes in Sport access cab.

 

I recommend driving both and going with what you like best. Originally I thought I was going to buy a Sport, just for the fact I thought the scoop looks good as well as the body colored fenders. The OR definitly rides softer and has more body roll, but either way they are both trucks and drive as one. Once I did more research and drove several I ended up going with the Off Road. I don’t really need crawl control or the locking diff, but just thought the OR was a better value.

 

They can take off only dealer add ons, from factory are not optional.

However if one of the add ons is a trashy spacer lift( too many dealers do these for curb appeal) than I highly doubt they will remove it to make a sale. They will more than likely opt for a dealer trade, or steer him in a different direction.

 

I went with the sport MT 4wd. I like it, however if I could go back and do it again I would definitely go OR this time.
Sport suspension is very harsh fyi.

 

I think you can lock the center differential and that's what distinguishes it from regular AWD. I haven't driven a 4runner so that's just my speculation.

 

You can just swap to the OR shocks. People damn near give them away

 

You can lock the center diff in many AWD offroad oriented vehicles. All that does is make it 4wd like our trucks.

 

This is a solid question tho, because you don’t want to buy a sport and then realeyes you can’t really go off-road what then

Also the OR engine gets hotter because there is no scoop, not a big deal unless you race like me

 

Do you want a truck or a performance car? If I bite into a watermelon and expect it to taste like a strawberry I am going to be disappointed. When I am in the Tacoma (OR) it doesn’t handle like my BMW Z3. I don’t expect it to.

At the end of the day your expectations are what will make you love or hate the on road performance of a Tacoma more so that the actual performance of the truck. Buy what meets your expectations instead of buying what you want and trying to make it meet expectations that are unrealistic.

 

This has to be the first time I've heard someone say they would take a softer suspension over mt. Kudos to you.

 

I was all set to buy the sport (pretty much all non off road driving/daily driver) until I test drove the OR back to back with the sport. It just felt better to me.

It's rare that I get off the pavement. The Sport does everything I need.

 

Lol I think you’ll find the differences are rather insignificant

Largely dependent on road conditions, tire type, psi etc
