Extended warranty

hey guys just bought a 2019 tacoma sport 2 weeks ago. Already changed the grill out to a pro model looks so much better to me. Just wanted your opinion. When i bought the truck they gave me an option of 100,000 mile bumper to bumper coverage for $2,800. I have 30 days to take advantage of this deal. My question is this- I will be putting at least 25,000 miles a year on the puckup. Do you think I’ll be needing $3,000 worth of repairs in less than 4 yrs? I would rather use that money for mods if you guys think i should have no worries for 100,000 miles. What’s you’re opinion on this? Thanks

That's too much, you can shop around for a lower price, also make sure it's a Toyota warranty and not a 3rd Party warranty

 

Yes, make sure that it's a Toyota warranty. When I bought my truck, I asked the finance manager to come down on the price of the 100K warranty. He said that he would and I asked him to send me the paperwork since it was late in the day and I had a bit of a drive home. When I got the paperwork, the warranty wasn't provided by Toyota and had a $100 per claim deductible. Obviously, that was a hard pass for me.

 

Also, as for the Powertrain, a 100k warranty is just a 40k mile extension since it comes with a 60k mile.

 

When I bought mine, I got 6 years of bumper to bumper Toyota expended warranty. While I'll probably never need it, to me personally the peace of mind is worth it.

 

I received an “offer” for the factory extension 100/72 at $1800 and passed, you can do better. Also, you wait until 30 days before you think your warranty will expire (about 2000 miles in your case) and seek an extended one then... no harm in waiting. If your truck seems to have issues, buy the extended warranty then. The only advantages in buying at purchase are 1) ability to finance the warranty, and 2) maybe a better price due to inflation potential.

 

It would be hard pressed to find a 100k mile Toyota where someone had to pay $2800 for repairs beyond the normal warrantee. Normal would be $0 beyond normal maintenance unless you did some non-stock mod which caused future problems. Period. If it was a Ford, Chrysler or GM product...thats a different story.

I have never purchased or needed an extended warranty on any new or used vehicle I have bought. Extended warranties are one of the biggest money making products offered by the dealership.

IF you are a long term keeper of vehicles and IF you are a nervous Nelly regarding warranties, as others have said, shop around, and only for a genuine Toyota warranty.

Also know you are NOT buying 100k coverage, you're buying the delta of the OE warranty they call come with and the terms of the new warranty.

 

Just bought my Limited two days ago and they offered me 10 year extended warranty for ~$1700. I took it. I doubt if I'll ever need it, but now I know how much the truck will cost over it's life. Oh, and this dealership provides lifetime power train warranty for free on all vehicles.

 

Under what conditions is the “lifetime warranty”? I’ve seen where the dealer will provide such, under the condition that ALL manufacturer’s recommended maintenance be performed by the dealership and on schedule. Also, why buy an extended warranty (spending $1700 extra upfront), when the dealer is covering the most expensive systems? For piece of mind maybe; but now you have 36mo/36000 bumper to bumper, 60mo/60000 drive train + unlimited/unlimited drive train; 60mo/unlimited corrosion; and you bought another bumper to bumper for $1700 to go an extra 7 years and maybe 40K miles... not sure you’ll get much value out of that.

A decent investment broker could get you 7% average over 10 years... real cost ~ $3300

 

The extended warranty is bumper-to-bumper as well. We tend to keep vehicles for at least 10 years and the peace of mind is worth it to me. I am fully aware that extended warranties are never worth their cost, overall. Same as all types of insurance. Otherwise the insurance companies couldn't make profits, or stay in business. My intent is not to try to beat the odds, I just want one less thing to think/worry about. The dealer also has free lifetime routine maintenance, so we let them do it all anyway. I'm well past the point where I want to do my own maintenance. I have done it all my life and now I'm ready to let someone else do it. Back problems and other issues make it not so much fun anymore.

Oh, and we have the Limited model and it has tons of electronics. I know how easy it is for electronics to go south, so that was a big factor as well.

 

I bought the extended warranty of 10-120k. But I only paid 1200ish for it. I’d pass on 2800 but if you could get it closer to 1k I’d probably do it. Imo.

If Toyota, toss out the dealer name so others can call and buy in too.

 

You can do better, I got Toyota Platinum $0 deductible 125k/6 years for $1040, this was after several quotes, some wouldnt come close to that quote claiming impossible and local dealer matched it and said he is literally making a dollar.

For those saying its not worth it, take some time to go through some of the issues guys have had, some mounting to $1000+ in repairs, I've seen transmission, transfer case, head gaskets, etc all on our 3rd gens. Its like anything else in life 50% chance you'll never use it, 50% chance you may use it and will pay for itself with one repair bill.

 

As I understand it, they base the extended warranty price on the price of the vehicle as well. I know they are very flexible with their pricing, but it makes sense to base their working price range on the vehicle price. If this is true, then we can't really compare one price to another without knowing the vehicle prices as well.
