Can you guys help me figure out this noise?

I've been googling like a madman the last couple days and finally found an obscure video that captures the noise exactly. It happens on my truck with the same intermittent timing and while the car is simply idle and stationary.

I had the same noise, thought it was center carrier but turned out to be universal joint at rear end.

 

A lot of research has pointed to that, but the noise happens whether the drive shaft is spinning or stationary. Wouldn't that rule out the u-joint?

Have you considered removing the belts just for giggles? It could be a water pump failing or another belt driven accessory. If not I imagine its time to look at tranny.

 

Manual trans?

 

I think I might try that. I haven't so far because I'm certain it's coming from the transmission area, but who knows. Simple enough to give the belts a shot.

If it ain’t a belt, or some dumb exhaust squeek it may be a cracked starter flexplate, let’s pray for dumb stuff. Good luck

 

Hmm, didn't consider an exhaust squeak...

 

When the Ujoint went bad on my '86 Jimmy years ago it made that exact sound but it was a "chirp" that increased with shaft revolutions.

 

If it happens when stationary, its not transmission related. Flex/pressure plate.

Yea sounds like it could be the belts but not sure about a noise like that from the transmission area. Does it happen when the engine is hot or cold?

 

Then torque converter. Regardless of tranny type, if the noise is coming from the bellhousing and the truck isn't moving, the issue is the parts joining the tranny and the engine together.

 

Mmmm, both. And just like the video, it's super random in its appearance. Sometimes it chips, a few seconds of no chirp, starts chirping again, another gap of nothing for 45 seconds, then another, on and on. Super random, no regular interval. When driving, it sounds like the sound a bad throwout bearing makes. But of course, it's not that since it's an auto.

 

Get a peice of maybe garden hose that's a a foot or 2 long. Or 1/2 heater hose. And stick it to your ear then kinda wave it around under there where you think the noise is. Itll be easier to pinpoint like that.
