7 qts added and still no dipstick reading

Just performed 30k oil change at home. First time I’ve changed it myself on this truck, now that the freebies are gone. 7 qt’s of Royal Purple 0w-20 and still don’t see any oil on the stick. I let the engine run for 10 minutes or so hoping it would flow and nothing...

Used a Mobil 1 filter,

What the hell is going on?

 

Are you sure you're pouring oil in the right spot??

 

yeah man... oil spout clearly labeled ENGINE OIL...

 

Did you look under the truck to make sure the oil isn’t draining out the pan through an uninstalled drain plug? Use a clean paper towel to wipe the dipstick and make sure you just aren’t seeing the nice, clean, clear oil? Did you pour the oil in the right spot?

 

6.2 Quarts is the correct capacity, you overfilled it at 7, the dipstick can be somewhat hard to read with fresh oil.

 

Make sure the plug is in

 

Get headlamp or some light and angle the dipstick. Unless you are dumping it without the plug in then you aren’t able to see the clean and mostly transparent fresh oil on the dipstick. Get a dry cloth to wipe the stick as well then re-dip it.

 

Hmm... there is a clear film of oil on the end each time I pull the stick out but it is literally crystal clear... any car I’ve ever done you at least see a hint of brown. Is that normal of Royal Purple perhaps? First time using it. It was a dark purple going in, not brown at all. And no it’s not leaking out of the bottom. I torqued the drain plug to spec.

 

This might be a silly question, are you checking the engine oil with the engine off or on?

 

Take a bit of sandpaper and rough up the dipstick. Clean it well before sticking it back in of course but the rougher surface will help hold the oil better and make it easier to check the level.

 

Do not put 7 more Qts in

 

Hopefully not the case of screwing back on the plug. He let the engine run 10 minutes!

Make sure dipstick is fully seated THEN pull out.
Even at 5qts you should see oil on the stick.

 

RP looks more clear on the stick than it does when you pour it in. Are you parked on fairly level surface to get accurate reading? Level may be above full now and you’re just not noticing it. I’d wait at least 10-20 minutes to take reading after engine ran. I never base the amount of oil I put in from what the manual says. On my wife’s car refills consistently take 3/4 more of quart than what manual says. I usually do a pretty warm/ hot oil drain too so I get quite a bit out.

 

Surprised you even got that dip stick out. That thing is a beast.

 

wipe off dip stick,reinsert,with a clean hand wipe the stick and see where oil is on stick.
I change my oil every 3000 miles.With 85,000 miles its still hard to see on the stick.

 

Guys this was nearly an hour ago. I don’t think time is much of a factor here. Level surface, I’ve ran the engine several times, turned it off, waited 2-3 mins and then taken a reading. Yes I’ve pushed the dipstick all the way in before pulling it back out. I think the clear liquid I’m seeing on the stick may be the oil, but I do not exaggerate when I say there is absolutely no color to it whatsoever. If that’s the case I definitely overfilled it...

I also added a few ounces of marvel mystery oil to help with deposits. I wonder if that rose to the top of the crankcase and that’s what I’m seeing..? MMO is has more of the consistency and color of gasoline.

 

Theres definitely oil on that dipstick...and it looks like you're a bit high

 

Theres basically no way you are still low on oil if none has leaked out since filling it. Not sure of the best way to drain .8 quarts, but it's probably not a great idea to run overfilled even though it's only that small amount. Good luck.

 

I agree, looks like it's about .25 inches above the max line
