You could also take a small drill bit and drill through the low/high divots, another way to help hold oil for a better reading.

One thing you can do is place the dipstick over and imprint it on a tissue paper to see where the fluid stops. Do you have a color deficiency (i.e., failing color blind test) issue?

That upper divot has oil in it, clean it out well and try again.

New synthetic oils are so colorless you almost have to turn the dipstick until light reflects off to see what is “wet” with oil... you can also use this method on your gal.

Hold the dipstick just slightly down at the end. Now and lay it on a clean white paper towel, You will see a wet line corresponding to the oil level.

Or you could use newspaper. Check oil AND check the new low price on chicken breasts at your local market!

To know for sure do not start engine for at least 10 minutes. Remove stick and wipe clean. Reinsert stick and allow to sit for about 1-2 minutes. Remove stick and with a clean napkin start to slowly slide it down the stick toward the end. As soon as it hits oil you’ll see the napkin get darker/wet. Beige napkins tend to show darkening better than white.

Good way to check new clear oil.....dip the stick, pull wipe it off, dip again then pull it out and carefully lay the dipstick flat on a paper towel the oil level print will show plainly on the paper towel.

This! It is way easier to see after leaving it out and letting oil in the tube run back down.
