KB Voodoo AluMax Rack Install with Diamondback Cover - Photo Heavy

I ended up changing my hoist system. I originally had tie downs but with all the gear I have on the rack now it’s hard to use those, and then bought a hoist system off Amazon. But it started to fail as it’s mechanism runs via my power drill. So I got a $100 HF hoist and rigged up some additional pulleys. Honestly I can’t believe how well it works and that it lifts evenly

I lined up all the pulleys square to the winch so they pull evenly

 

I'm jealous of the space that you have to winch your rig out of the way. The canoe and bicycle winches take up all the space in my garage...

Question about the iKamper attachment - could you not clamp the iKamper directly to the existing (width-wise) cross-beams that form the structure of the rack? Or did you add your own (width-wise) cross-bars because of where the iKamper attachment points are?

It would seem that some RTTs like length-wise bars to attach to, but the iKamper mounts to the width-wise crossbars, which the Voodoo doesn't have...

 

I could have attached it via the cross bars, but honestly I don’t like the way most RTT’s attach to racks. Depending on how long the tent is you can attach to the main 2 rack crossbars on Voodoo racks. I don’t like the little mounting plates RTT’s have with 2 screws and 2 nuts it leaves room for play and things working loose. I decided to drill a hole through the aluminum cross bars and use 1 strong carriage bolt to a stop nut at each each corner. It has worked well for me.

Bummer about the space in your garage. Bikes can be put lots of places, any chance you can reprioritize your storage solutions?

 

Oh I see.... I haven't mounted a RTT before, so between figuring that out and how to mount the Voodoo with a tonneau cover, you've really helped out. Thanks!

 

Most mount like this. I did a single fatter carriage bolt straight through the rail cross bar instead

 

Are these extensions sold by KB also or did you source them elsewhere?

The standard slides are fine, but with my Plano totes I wanted to make it pull out further so I could load and unload them more easily. Then I figured if I was changing them out might as well go longer and added the extra storage

 

Are the aluminum bars even needed? Could you go straight through the tent into the bed rack, forgoing the aluminum channels that come with tents?

 

That’s a great question that I’m guessing iKamper could answer better. Theoretically you could remove the aluminum channels and drill through. However my guess is the channels serve two functions: length-wise strength and dispersing the weight.

I personally wouldn’t do it as the base is a honeycomb type aluminum and 4 single bolts might pull through

 

I don’t know about ikamper, but it seems like every other rtt has 4 holes that the aluminum rails bolt to/through, structurally there would be no difference if you just bolted it to the rack if the rack ran the same length along the bottom as the aluminum rails. Still just 4 bolts going through the tent base regardless of whats under it.

Like your build. I too am getting the Alumax for my Tundra (I miss my Tacooooooo, but a whole story why I upgraded, but have another Taco in sight). Do have a question as you noted you bought the "tall" version. The rack come in 18" and 22". I have a BakFlip tonneau and Chad says the rack will work and I can continue to open my BakFlip, but will need the tonneau brackets. The brackets add 2.5" to the height. What height did you get; 18" or 22"? I'm thinking the bed to roof measurement on the Taco is less than the Tundra, 18" puts it just even with my bed light, which I want to you. Yet, the 18" + 2.5" bracket, makes 20.5" and should look good. I fear 22 +2.5 = 24.5" may be too high for the look. Thoughts?

 

I did the 18” and for me that’s just right. I had to add an inch for my iKamper to clear the shark fin, but I’d rather add an inch than be 4” too tall. Easier to add to the height than take it away. The 18” was high enough for me to also have plenty of clearance under the rack on my storage drawer.

 

I emailed Chad again, it now appears, the BakFlip won't clear when folded open. Ack! I know that is definitely the case if I was to stay with 18" as one panel of the BakFlip is 61 3/4" wide and 18" high. I'll have to look at the dimensions of the Voodoo to see if any chance of clearance if I use the 2.5" tonneau bracket. Chad suggest using bungies to pull things out from the bed. Can't do that with my generator and ARB fridge due to weight. If I add a bed pull out, the added weight is a problem and the loss of 6" in height those items would be higher than the bed or tonneau. I use my tonneau as I've had stuff stripped off my truck with an open bed and there are times I haul gear and need the tonneau open. The one option is to dumpt the BakFlip and go with a rolling tonneau which then the rack would work, or (and I'm spitting the taste out of my mouth), go with BakFlip's crappy little vertical rack bars. It's $1900 for a new rolling tonneau that holds up to 250 lbs weight (BakFlip holds 400) or $738 to add the BakFlip rails, which even my truck would be embarrassed to wear. (lol)

 

I made my own low profile bedslide for my fridge to fit under the cover, post #105 if you didn’t see it. Works for me

 

Hey @Papadave418, any rust/powder coat issues on the rack so far?

 

Only on the bike mount where I scratched it, it’s steel. No where else that I’ve seen as most of it is aluminum and stainless steel hardware

 

The pull out drawer is very interesting. I'd like to see some more info/drawings on that piece - or if you build/sell them as a side hustle.
