How on Earth do you read the oil dipstick?

Folks, you need to check the oil when it’s warm.

Take ‘er out for a spin.
    Park on level ground.
    Wait 15 minutes.
    Pull the dipstick.
Wipe the dipstick with a clean absorbent material.
Reinsert the dipstick fully. Twist if you need to get it fully seated.
Pull the dipstick all the way out while keeping it pointed down.
Clear the engine bay with the dipstick to a place that offers sufficient lighting for you to read the dipstick.
Read whichever side of the dipstick is most most visible to you.
Reinsert the dipstick- twist to secure if that’s a feature.
    Adjust oil level according.
    Repeat the above if necessary.

See it drives me crazy because what if it was somewhat overfilled? No way to know... Or what of it is semi low? No way to know
    Ahhhh

I've never heard of checking it when it is warm...is that specific to the v6 of the 2nd Gen? I'll try that too.

Also... I can see the oil no problem, it is just all over the stick...haha. I mean IF it is accurate it looks likey engine has 3 times the oil it needs but I have no symptoms of overfill...

Have had the same problem. Read where putting cross hatch or roughing up the surface on the dipstick helps. Gives the oil something to cling to.

I really dont understand the issue. Read the dipstick in the morning after the truck sat overnight. There wont be any residual oil above the actual fill level.

See the very first line below.
Operating temp is most likely a recommendation from all manufacturers.

Remember, according to the manual, anywhere between the marks is normal, only add when you get to or below the bottom mark. If you’re at the bottom mark, add one quart and you’re good to go

1- use some 100 grid sandpaper and scuff the bottom of the dipstick.
2- pull out the stick in a slow, smooth motion. Look at both sides. One side will be smeared all the way up with oil, the other side will show the level. You only get one try before you have to wait a while for the tube to clear.

FWIW I always pre-fill the filter with oil before I install it. Call me paranoid about not having any oil to circulate the first few seconds after the engine starts.

My V6 4.0L has the remote oil filter mount up by the battery. The filter sits on there "upside" down aka threads down. So pre-filling isnt an option on this truck otherwise I would haha

Do you even own a Tacoma? Sounds like a mess considering the filter needs to be installed upside down.

If you think the Taco is tough, try getting an accurate reading on a Subaru!

The only engines that need oil level checked when warm is dry sump oiling systems. All others with conventional wet sump oiling can be checked warm or cold. Just allow 5 minutes after running for oil to drain back into pan. I used sandpaper to put hatchmarks on my dipstick, seemed to help the reading.

Mine always looks like a Rorschach inkblot test, too. I just make sure the oil reading always looks like the same kind of loony-toons reading as all the previous times, then proceed with my affairs.
