I don’t get any where near the 24 average. I might see that once and a while (backroads doing 45), but average 16 to 18 typically. Worse if on the highway over 70. Don’t have exact numbers but my 09, 4 cylinder, 5 speed got between 18 and mid 20s, unless towing then I felt like it was gallons to mile.

Everyone's situation is going to be different so it's never going to be a fair comparison. I have an access cab SR, with no frills, so it doesn't weigh much. I live in Florida where it's flat. I'm not sure we even get winter gas. I have a decent commute to work average 35-55 mph and I use cruise control a lot, my trip averages that pop on the screen average like 27 for my commute and I've seen as high as 28. Short trips around town I do not get anywhere near that.

I wouldn’t care if the 2.7 got 35 mpg. I drove a 3rd gen 2.7 auto exit cab, and it was a dog. I seriously think a customers old 70’s VW bug 4 speed I drove might of felt faster. Atleast it was more fun to to drive. I just wasn’t feeling it at all. I’m not impressed by the 3.5 either but atleast it feels like it can move when your on it. But I get it. It was a plain Jane basic pickup the guy used for work. Can’t really beat it for the price if you need something that can haul around some stuff and you can beat to hell and it not cost you a lot of money.

That being said a buddy of mine had a 98 single cab, with the 2.7 in MT. Wasn’t the fastest truck but was awesome to drive and never really felt underpowered. I know the truck was a lighter but it was night and day from what I remember. Can’t comment on a 2.7 in a 2nd gen. Not sure I ever drove one.

Being a dog. I test drove both on extended drives several times several models. I purchased the 2.7 and drive it every day, highway and back roads. It holds it's own. I'm sure in the 1/4 mile the 6 will take it but this is not a Chevelle. It's a Tacoma. My 2.7 gets great gas mileage and has enough passing power for every day driving period.

I’m sure it gets great gas mileage, mainly because of how slow the speedometer was moving. Maybe the manual is better but the auto was a dog. Or maybe I didn’t get on it enough. I don’t know. I know I’ve driven Yaris’ that felt peppier and had more throttle response. Not knocking the 2.7. It’s tried and true. And like I said in the 1st gen single cab with the 5 speed the thing was kind of a beast for what it was. It was a fun truck to drive. 2.7 auto in a AC 3rd gen, not so much

Mine is auto. And again I drove both 6 and 4 before my decision . I strongly recommend anyone interested in either to go drive both yourself on extended drives without the salesman and drive them like you own them. I did and I made the right choice for me. I could bash the 6 but wont.

I won’t own another stick daily. The auto is just too convenient. I specifically went to the dealer asking for an auto. Just like I won’t own an automatic sports car. Different vehicles with different functions. I’ve driven a manual muscle/sports car since I was 16 (mustangs, M3’s and Subaru). I get the want for a manual, but with how much I drive and I’m traffic, I’m good.

I test drove a 19 sport with a manual the other day and I have to say I prefer the auto. Theres no power untill you hit 3500 RPM then it feels like you floored it. The stick and clutch felt really cheap and sloppy to me also. I've driven a lot of different manuals but this was very disappointing. Dont even get me started on riding the shit out of the clutch to reverse. Over all one of the worst manuals I've ever driven.

I think mine is one of the easiest I have driven. My only issue is the location of reverse and how easy it is to get reverse by accident. That being said, my 09 four cylinder was more enjoyable to beat on.

Maybe there was something wrong with the one you drove, I find my truck to be quite easy, the shifter is night and day improved over the 2nd Gen.

Now that you say that it was about 5 to 10 degrees out and I drove it off the lot and put probably 2 miles on it. Just started it and went, my old Ford truck with a hydraulic clutch felt funny when it was cold out untill it warmed up. It was really hard to find a good seating position and use my clutch leg with out hitting the dash or wheel. I felt like I had to compensate to not hit my knee. I'm 5-10.

The cold definitely has an impact, the clutch does feel a bit lazy until it warms up a little.
