@Littles so I went back to the trackers. And it looks like we were 12 miles away from each. The others with me did not hear your transmutations but I could.

I figured it was somewhere around 12-15 miles when I lost you. I stopped sending aprs beacons when I aired up and the restarted right after the last time I heard you.

I wish I could see my detailed packet history on aprs.fi to see which packets hit on which signal strength

Well I decided to take the Plunge and took my Technicians Test on Saturday at the Monument Library...thanks to the folks at W0TLM for setting it up!

I passed and now am now looking to chat in the next couple of weeks. Still trying to figure out the basics on a SIMPLE radio.

In the next month or two (or sooner) I will be adding a setup to the Tacoma to see if anyone even drives up to Centennial area and back to Monument.

A lot to learn but willing!

    My goals:

    1. Simply learn the HAM stuff for my Tech category
    2. Install a capable transceiver in my 2019 Taco
    3. Learn more about APRS in case of a Fly Fishing/off roading emergency
    4. Get a home HAM shack for when I am working from home
    5. Just about anything else....LOL

Seen this thread? The file I have programs on my radio is one fr the first page.

If I can get my computer/cable to co-operate again there are a few people that need to get there radios programmed.

Depends on what ya wanna do, personally I recommend the ftm-400 to everyone, part because it’s a great 2m/70cm dual band with 2 channels and aprs. Other option are kenwood 710g and icom. Then there are a lot of single and dual band from all the manufactures.

Since you are new, I wouldn't go crazy spend wise on first one. Most of us ran the Hand Held ("HT" in HAM speak) BaoFeng's for last year or 2.

Like Josh said, there is still a good sale (-$170) on the higher end FTM-400 https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-014544

After Researching most of the fall, I am hoping for some "bigger" sale on the TM-710G.

Wish the cost of just the remote heads would come back down again. It's almust foolish not to just pick up a d710 if you're coming from a v71a, where switching the head out used to be a viable option
